If you’re considering watching a relatively recent award-winning movie, I’d recommend Milk! For the small section of people who have no clue what the title represents, the Milk movie is not about the healthy drink that’s got from cows, goats, etc. It’s a biographical movie that depicts the life of Harvey Milk, the man who became the first gay person to be voted a public officer in San Francisco, California. Milk also laid claim to the distinction of being among the first three gay persons to do so in all of the United States.

This second movie on Harvey Milk and follows the storyline of its previous version. The previous version of the movie was released way back in November 1984 with the title ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’. This movie made its way to Oscars and won an Oscar for the Best Documentary Film. People do tend to compare the revised version with the original one, however, they couldn’t make out much of a difference quality wise. The 2008 version and got nominated for 8 categories at the Academy Awards and won Oscars with the titles of Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay. Best Actor in a Leading Role was awarded to Sean Penn for his excellent performance in the role of Harvey Milk. Best Original Screenplay was awarded to Dustin Lance Black.

The filming for Milk was also as authentic as it gets with the crew moving down to San Francisco’s Castro Street and even the camera shop that Milk once owned – Castro Camera. The movie captures Milk’s life from the age of 40 right up to his assassination. It starts with him in New York from where he moves to San Francisco with his lover Scott Smith refusing to stay hiding in his closet for the rest of his life.

Franciscan community. Milk basically focuses on the rights of gays in the by gone years and their upgradation. Harvey Milk was one man who really worked hard to change this part of every gay’s life at the time when being a gay was considered awfully shameful. Milk saw many failures in the early years of his life before being voted as supervisor. The realization of the seriousness of the gay rights issue incited a struggling phase in Milk’s life. Two of his colleagues Anita Bryant and Dan White were also elected at the same time as Milk.

Dan White’s role has been perfectly portrayed by Josh Brolin. Dan White is a character with conservative ideas and was therefore constantly “out-voted” by Milk and other supervisors who are liberal. Dan White’s increasing frustrations end up in devastating mess and mark the chilling end of the movie. ‘Milk’ is one movie you should surely go for. It is interesting, emotional and funny. Animation movies are almost always a fun watch. Master Shifu truly believes that one fine day Po will master the skills of Kung fu and beat Tai Lung and starts off with the transforming training of Po towards ‘The Dragon Warrior’.

Grasping storyline, witty humour and interesting plot are some elements of the movie that succeed at keeping the viewers glued to the screen. The overwhelming response received by Kung fu Panda at the 61st Cannes Film Festival was clearly evident which was followed by the release of this movie over the rest of the world.

She offers this valuable help by pawning her valuable property and inheritance. While Oscar is on his way to deliver the owed money to Sykes and repay his debt, he is struck once again by the addictive environment of racehorse betting that compels him to place an unsafe bet on one of the horses.

Oscar loses all the money that he was betting on in the horse race and becomes tensed about the potential consequences that may follow when he won’t be able to repay his debt. In the midst of all these tensions, Oscar faces a tough situation when he is confronted by Lenny (Jack Black) and his brother Frankie (Michael Imperioli).

On seeing Oscar and the jelly fish, Frankie asks Lenny to attack. Ernie and Bernie scoot and Lenny pretends to attack Oscar, ending up rescuing him. He’s unable to hide the fact from Frankie, however, and enraged by his continued disobedience to kill, Frankie charges and is killed by an anchor. Terrified, Lenny flees, and Oscar is left with the dead whale which he sees as his ticket to fame and glory, giving himself the title of Sharkslayer.

Oscar’s dream of becoming rich comes true. But all this leisure and luxury has a price attached with it that Oscar did not observe. It was the revengeful attitude of Don Lino (Robert De Niro), father of Frankie and Lenny that was on fire and intended to finish off the life of Oscar. Oscar in his personal life faces turmoil as Angie senses the betrayal.

Underworld fans will really love the latest movie ‘Rise of the Lycans’ as it has all the mix of blood, gore and adventure. The film delves into the reason for the start of the war between the Lycans and the Death Dealers. The reason for the dispute is a very predictable one a la Romeo and Juliet stories.

The director of the first two installments Len Wiseman returns to produce the third one and Patrick Tatopoulos is the director of this movie. The story goes like this: Viktor is the head of the vampire clan in Eastern Europe but he fears the werewolves as they are very strong and barbaric in nature. But to give twist to the tale one of the captured female werewolf gives birth to a child which looks more like a human.

This child grows up to become a blacksmith for the vampire tribe and works like a slave. This child grows up to become Lucian. To add further twist he is madly in love with Sonja, daughter of Viktor. He knows it is a sin to love Viktor’s daughter but he cannot leave the beautiful Sonja. They even meet secretly from time to time.

The Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans movie is actually a prequel to the previous two Underworld movies. Len Wiseman, the director of the first two movies, produces this one but the leading star, Kate Beckinsdale, can only be seen towards the end of the film and that too in the form of a clip from the first film. Special Effects man Patrick Tatopoulos is the man behind the camera this time and does one hell of a good job. Like the other two movies, this one is rated ‘R’ for the free display of blood and gore. Rhona Mitra disappoints us all with barely any skin show.

The latest Underworld movie is as much enjoyable as the previous two editions. The action is fast and furious and goes well with the storyline. Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy as Lucian and Viktor are brilliant. Rhona Mitra handles her role quite well but falls much short of expectations. After all, it is hard to replace someone of the caliber of Kate Beckinsdale. The film scores heavily with the critic as it has the right casting and a very good director in Patrick.

The actors perform creditably and each one of them gives a scintillating performance. Martin Sheen and Bill Nighy deserve special mention as both of them deliver creditable performances. Rhona Mitra steps into the shoes of Kate Beckinsdale and fails miserably. It is real hard to accept Rhona in her place. The film as a whole may seem dj vu but is still worth a single watch. The blood has to be there in a vampire vs werewolves story as the film shows medieval weapons being used. So it is better to keep the children at home and watch it all alone.

The Underworld fans all over should rejoice. The movie is doing great at box office and there is no reason why the producers won’t be tempted to bring out a fourth edition in the future. There is a strong belief that Walt Disney and Hayao Miyazaki are masters of the same genre but born at different times. We have seen some beautiful animated films from the hands of Miyazaki like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Ponyo, however, is a major disappointment. There are a lot of loopholes in the plot and other deficiencies too which make this movie look really bad. Ponyo is actually an anime which might bore the young teens after a few minutes. It will be enjoyed by the kids only.

The film is inspired by Hans Christain Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid”. The plot of the film is thus: a goldfish falls in love with a human boy and she hopes to become a girl so that she can live with the boy happily ever after. It is a simple love story that has been poorly told.

Mr. Miyazaki totally disappoints with this movie. It is hard to believe that he is the same man who directed classics like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle”. Ponyo is nowhere these great films and one wonders why Mr Miyazaki erred while making Ponyo. The animation is good but nothing to write about and we fear the audience might lose interest after the initial 30 minutes or so.

The main drawback of the Ponyo movie is the script. A film cannot succeed if it has a weak script. The same happens with Ponyo. However, there are a few scenes which will capture the imagination of the audience. There is one scene in particular that deserves a special mention – the one in which Ponyo takes the human form and runs along a giant Tsunami – is simply stunning. However, we expected a lot of these from the person who pioneered Japanese animation.

Ponyo(Noah Cyrus) is a small fish who leaves her home and father(Liam Neeson), a magical sea guardian, to explore the wide world. She gets caught in a trash and is swept ashore in to the hands of Sosuke(Frankie Jonas), a 5 year old boy. The two starts to like each other and one day she accidentally tastes a drop of Sosuke’s blood which changes her to a sweet little girl. Her father makes a failed attempt to arrest the changes. Ponyo breaks free and heads for the surface.

There are a lot of questions that follow – why are the tides rising? Why is the moon drawing close? You need to watch the movie to find the answers to these. The underlying condition is that their love needs to blossom for world order to stabilize. I will not recommend watching this movie at a theater. You can watch Ponyo online free without any hassles.

The children will probably love Ponyo but I feel a sense of pity for the parents as it will be a real torture for them. The voice, though, is good especially by Cate Blanchette, Matt Damon and of course, Liam Neeson. The film boasts of good actors as the voices so it is sad to see such a poor product. We hope Mr Miyazaki will bounce back with his next. Till then we need to be contented with this one only.

Trust Pierre Morrel to deliver an action thriller that will leave you speechless for the duration of the movie. He does just that. The film is very tense and action filled right from the start. Pierre manages to bring out a superlative performance from all the actors including seasoned actors like Liam Neeson.

The Taken movie revolves around an ex – CIA operative Bryan Mills who is a doting father and a divorced from his wife. He makes every effort from time to time to mend the relations with her daughter but every effort is thwarted by her wife as she does not want Bryan to be close to their daughter.

The Taken movie moves into top gear after this and the highlight of the movie is perhaps the conversation between Bryan and one of the kidnappers. Bryan gives a clear warning to the person and told him that he will get killed if his daughter is not returned by him. “I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you”

Bryan moves into Paris and within a 96 hour timeframe he decides to find his daughter. Bryan is super fast in her search of her daughter and before the kidnappers could blink their eyes, he has already made his next move. He pins down one baddie after and another and inches closer to the placer where Kim has been kept, the last thirty minutes is simply adrenaline pumping and you should not even think going anywhere. The car chases and the fast editing will remind you of Bourne movies and Commando. But this is a far better thriller than any of those. It is sleek and classy.

The trailers of the movie did not give out any major detail of the story. So kudos to the makers of the film for that. Pierre and his team have easily delivered the best action thriller of the year. The action sequences are the highlight of this movie.

The film showcases some real good performances from all the actors. One of the better performances comes from Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace. Liam Neeson as a desperate father gives a brilliant performance and this role is quite different from the kind of roles he has essayed before. Maggie Grace is convincing as her daughter but has very little to do in a film which is action oriented.

The film is already popular all over the world. In fact people hooked onto the net are already watching this movie and are submitting rave reviews about it. You too can be a part of this bandwagon. Good comedy films are hard to come by with actors hamming it up unnecessarily but The Hangover movie, definitely qualifies as a laugh-a-minute flick that keeps you funny bones tickled for its entire duration. Todd Phillips’ direction, The Hangover was produced by both Phillips and Daniel Goldberg. It was written by Jon Lucas, Scott Moore, Todd Phillips and Jeremy Garelick. Released on the 5th of June, 2009, The Hangover became an immediate box office hit.

The movie centers around a group of four friends, one of whom – Doug (played by Justin Bartha) – is all set to tie the knot and settle down with the love of his life Tracy (Sasha Barrese). Bent on giving him one last night of bachelor-style fun, he’s taken to Las Vegas by two friends – Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) – as well as Alan (Zach Galifianakis), his future bro-in-law.

The “getaway” vehicle happens to be a vintage convertible Merc that’s lent to the boys by the bride’s dad (Jeffrey Tambor). Having booked themselves a villa at the Ceasars Palace Hotel & Casino, the men pussyfoot their way to the roof of the hotel and raise a toast to the night to come. The next scene shows them waking up the following morning safe in their suite but with no recollection whatsoever about the previous night’s happenings. Doug, the future bridegroom is also found missing.

Before they come to any conclusions they get a lot of clues on what they did the night before which includes a messed up suite, a baby crying in the closet, tiger in the bathroom, credit card bill of $800, Phil wearing a hospital band on his wrist and Stu missing a tooth. They also witness a mattress being removed from a statue of the hotel outside and the most hilarious happens to be the patrol car brought by the valet driver.

They track down on their clues and at the hospital the doctor who treated Phil informs them that traces of the drug Flunitrazepam was found in Phil’s blood which explains their memory loss as it is known to be the date rape drug. The doctor then informs them that they were talking about coming from a wedding and tracking down on it they find out that Stu who was about to propose to his girlfriend Melissa(Rachel Harris) had married Jade(Heather Graham) who is a stripper and the mother of the baby in the closet.

Things go awry as Asian gangsters attack them asking for ‘where is he’ all the time. They miraculously escape from them and end up with the police, when they go to jade’s apartment as they think the thugs referred to the baby. How they escape from the police and get their vintage convertible back and how they trace out their own whereabouts of the previous night forms the story. The climax answers the question how they get Doug back and how they find him.

The original Friday the 13th was a runaway hit. So when the trailers of the new version hit the screens people were already curious. The fans of blood and gore had some real high expectations. They wanted to be satisfied on three counts – heart stopping suspense, loads of love making scenes between the young couples and some real gross death scenes. I daresay the new version has passed in all the three tests.

The Friday the 13th movie does not waste time in character development or the introduction of the ’stars’ through different scenes. The movie right away jumps onto what it knows best. It has a healthy dose of violence, blood and sex.

At the first seen we see Jason’s mother finishing off a bunch of campers who had previously accounted for Jason. So she takes a gruesome revenge on them by killing them all in the most brutal manner possible. The film then focuses on present day wherein we see a bunch of youngsters hiking through the woods in search of marijuana plants.

The rest is nothing new. Jason attacks them all and carries on what his mother started. He kills them all with lots of blood splattering around. Gore lovers will start liking this movie from this point. But after around 6 weeks, Clay Miller decides to come to Crystal Lake in search of his missing sister. He meets a group of college kids who are looking forward to a weekend fun at a cabin near the lake.

The story of all the versions of Friday the 13th is quite simple. People are shown going to the woods adjoining the Crystal Lake and they get killed in a barbaric way. You might feel that the series has a one-track story. But I don’t expect people thronging the theaters for watching an award winning story or any emotional scenes. Jason is shown killing people around with a machete in the earlier versions. But he gets himself promoted in this flick. He is using bear traps, bow and arrow, ice pick, an axe and well, anything that is sharp actually.

The film will be a huge hit with teenagers as it has a good deal of violence, sex scenes and chases. But these are all what makes a good bloody horror film. Performances of the leads are pretty ordinary throughout except perhaps Jared Padalecki who plays the brother’s part. He does justice to his role and let’s hope that he gets some good offers after this. He has the potential to make it big.

My suggestion you would be – watch this movie at home and save your precious green currency. The film deserves a single watch, at least. So just switch on your PC and watch Friday the 13th online free. The movie is not for the kids or the faint-hearted. But you can take your girlfriend along and expect her to bury her head into your shoulder. That’s the best this movie can give you. Let’s just home there is no new sequel to this one.
