The art of television comedy will never would have changed to become a part of primetime viewing if it were not for the phenomenal TV show, Everybody Loves Raymond. The interest of the audience is highly aroused due to the fact that the plot and the scenes being shown on the show comes from the actual experiences of the lead character, Ray Romano and the show producer, Phil Rosenthal. There were episodes that were based on the lives of the writers and staff of the show. Other characters in the show are actually counterparts of real persons who are important to the lives of Ray Romano and Phil Rosenthal. This is what makes the show different from those currently existing in the broadcast business: the personal touch of the characters that play their roles in it.

The show was first aired on September 13, 1996 and from there it quickly gained much popularity in comparison to the competing shows at that moment. Raymond Barone is the main protagonist who works as a newspaper journalist in Long Island. His scope covers all the local athletic or sports events and local news. Raymond possessed a great sense of humor which entangled him to serious problems since many of his jokes were tactless and inappropriate to the situations. His family was composed of his wife (Patricia Heaton), Geoffrey and Michael his twin sons and Ally his daughter. Just across his house are his parents Marie and Frank and his brother Robert.

Debra finds it especially difficult to bear Marie’s company for any length of time. Marie often provokes such negative feelings in Debra by passing caustic comments and cosseting Ray. She also openly shows her preference for Ray over his sibling Robert. This makes Robert jealous causing him to pick fights with Ray. Despite their constant quibbling however, the brothers do have a strong bond between them.

Raymond’s dad, Frank, is also very unusual. He acts strangely towards other people and does not exercise care when talking to other people. He has this aura of sarcasm around him. However, there is a good side to Frank being so focused on his family. The show is also highlighted by the jealousy that Debra shows on the sports casting job of Raymond. She thinks that he loves his job much more than her and she is not getting the attention she deserves from her husband. Debra makes it a point to deprive Ray of sex in order for him to feel her jealousy.

Everybody Loves Raymond has not only proved itself popular with audiences in the United States but in several other countries across the world namely Australia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, India, Israel, Latvia, Mongolia, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, and UK.
