Alexander Schwab’s Mushrooming without Fear

Mushrooms are great for food and for medicine. I really love them. I love studying them and can identify them from pictures in the books I read. What I really wanted to be able to do was to go into the woods and feel confident about finding, picking and later eating the mushrooms. For some reason there were two mushrooms that I felt clear about identifying: one was Turkey Tail, Trametes Versicolor. The other was Hemlock Reishi. But, besides these two kinds of mushrooms, no other mushrooms seemed obvious. I was never sure of what I was looking at. And, if I picked and ate them, I worried about getting sick, and even dying.
At some point I found a book that described the process of wild crafting, finding mushrooms in the woods, safely and confidently. This is Alexander Schwab’s book: Mushrooming Without Fear, a Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Safe and Delicious Mushrooms. This book is clearly written. It is a step by step account of how to find and know the identify the mushrooms you are looking at.
Essentially mushrooms either have gills, tubes, spines or ridges. These are major identifying factors.
There are eight rules about picking mushrooms:
Number 1: Never take a mushroom with gills.
Rule Number 2: The mushrooms to pick have tubes, spines and ridges. Some exceptions are puffballs, horn of plenty and cauliflower mushrooms.
Rule Number 3: Mushrooms which have been clearly identified with all the positive ID marks may be eaten.
Rule Number 4: Take mushrooms that are in great condition. A rotten smell is a rotten mushroom. A soggy feel is a soggy mushroom.
Rule Number 5: Do not eat wild-crafted mushrooms raw. Wash and cook all of the mushrooms that you find.
Rule Number 6: Look out before you cut the mushroom. Use a stick to check around the mushroom. There could be other living ones close by. Leave some mycelium, roots, and cover the mycelium with leaves so that another mushroom will grow. Put the same kinds of mushrooms together in your basket, in case there is an odd one.
Rule Number 7: Do not suffocate your mushrooms with plastic. Mushrooms like to breathe.
Rule Number 8: If you are not sure, leave it alone.
There are sections on how to accurately identify mushrooms with tubes, boletes and hen of the woods; mushrooms with ridges, chanterelles; mushrooms with spines, Hedgehog Fungus; and Puffballs, Horn of Plenty and Cauliflower mushrooms. The pictures are great: clear and easy to transfer into the woods.
There is some more general information: about different regions, mushrooms relationships to trees, how to take care of mushrooms, cooking. Writers get paid word count in articles and by % of gross sales (royalties) in book publishing; usually the thicker the book the higher the price and the higher the royalty. Have you noticed yet that writers are unnecessarily verbose. That means that there are many words within sentences that are just there as fillers. Sure it sounds like Tonto of the Lone Ranger. But, you can understand what that means and you can easily eliminate the need for all those filler words.

Let’s quickly present the Barnes and Noble Nook Wi-Fi to you. At just $149 this device features the 6 in. E Ink display and a color LCD. It has a 1.3 GB internal memory compared to the current 1 GB common among the other eReaders nevertheless its memory is expanding so no worries right now there. It weighs a bit more as compared to other devices at 11.6 oz, most of the competition are usually way below that at 9 and 8 oz.
Also there is a more expensive model priced at $199, which adds 3g to the mix. At a glance you can already start to appreciate that for your price the device is actually pretty good value for money. Net browsing is also quite slow. The touchscreen can also be a mite tough so if you plan to use the virtual keyboard you may find it frustrating. What some people appreciate, because other eBook shops don’t allow it, is you can loan or borrow ebooks with others that own a Nook. Alas it’s a one-time deal so save this for your current bestest friend!
