Black Coffee Has Been Written In The 1930s As A Theater Production

In the 1930s, a mystery writer named Agatha Christie wrote her first stage play. It was named Black Coffee. Now, eight decades later, Charles Osborne has turned it into a novel. He wrote it as if he were in the role of Agatha Christie herself. He is the author of “The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie”. The protagonist in this current book Agatha Christie Black Coffee With Hercule Poirot brings that fictional character to life yet again.

It begins with a scientist trying to figure out where his secret formula is. He had locked it in a safe. Now it’s gone. This formula was created to assist in the British war effort. He has called Hercule Poirot to come to his country estate and help him find it. But, he does not survive to greet him.

Indications of this book having once been a stage play are on every page at the beginning. The plot is relatively simple and the reader thinks he can guess who murdered Sir Claud. It is easy to imagine that Christie herself penned every page.

Sir Claud Amory is in his library surrounded by his family who were all staying with him at his estate. Now he suspects one of them has stolen his secret formula that was locked in a safe. Everyone listened as he talked about the situation. The missing formula had been destined to assist the British war effort.

A servant was asked to lock everybody into the library together. No one in and no one out. Sir Claud sat sipping his coffee as he told his family who he had summoned. As they waited for Poirot, Sir Claud commented several times that his coffee tasted bitter.

The room was darkened, as he waited to see if anyone would respond to his request to return the secret formula. Suddenly, the lights came on and lo and behold, Sir Claud Amory was dead. On the table in front of him was the secret formula.

When Hercule Poirot and his sidekick Captain Hastings arrived, they walked into a murder case instead of a missing document case. This murder mystery is fun to read. Christie’s fans and other mystery genre afficionados will be especially enthralled. To add to the appeal, there is not any filthy language in the entire tome. Something of a miracle and dam (sic) refreshing.

You are going to be guessing until the very end.

Agatha Christie is the undisputed queen of British crime and mystery writing and released many of her novels before World War II. She had a number of different characters that she used regularly, but the two best known and loved are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Agatha Christie The Big Four with Hercule Poirot is a slightly different book to many of her other crime books.

This book is quite different from other Agatha Christie novels because it is a book in four parts instead of being one single story about a crime. This book was published in 1927 after parts of it were serialized in Sketch Magazine.

The book opens with a regular Christie character Captain Hastings visiting Hercule Poirot to find that he is making preparations for a trip to the USA. Poirot has been offered a large sum of money by an American to travel there and he asks Hastings if he knows anything of the “Big Four”.

They are visited before Poirot departs by a character who tells them of the “Big Four” that one of the members is a Chinese mastermind, another a supposed American, a French femme fatale and the final member is known as the “destroyer”. Hastings and Poirot pretend to depart for their trip, but return to the apartment to find the man dead. This naturally prompts Poirot into investigative action.

The books takes the reader on the classic Christie roller coaster of plot twists and turns. It also features a cameo by Poirot’s twin brother before the story resolves itself in a manner entirely satisfying to the reader.

So if you want a book that is a real page turner and will keep you guessing until the end, then Agatha Christie the Big Four with Hercule Poirot is a great choice to make.
