The Story Behind The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet movie has just been released and is number 1 at the box office. It marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of this masked hero. Actor Seth Rogen began writing the screenplay with hometown (Vancouver B.C.) friend Evan Goldberg in 2007. Rogan himself stars as the masked crime fighter along with Jay Chou as his sidekick Kato and Cameron Diaz as Lenore Case, his criminologist assistant.
This movie is a modern version based on the original Green Hornet that was created way back in 1936 by George W. Trendle. Trendle was co-owner of Detroit radio station WXYZ and he and writer Fran Striker created The Green Hornet, a radio series drama about an urban crime fighter. Broadcast live, The Green Hornet hit the airwaves on January 31, 1936 and the radio series ran until 1952.
The Green Hornet was Brett Reid, a wealthy playboy and newspaper publisher in an unnamed city. During the day he ran The Daily Sentinel, but at night he fought crime in the guise of the Green Hornet. He based his name on his car horn?s disturbing bee like noise. He had no super powers, but was a good fighter, a sharp shooter and had an arsenal of high-tech devices. These included a gun that shot knockout gas and one that delivered the Hornet?s Sting, electric shocks. And then there was The Black Beauty. Not a horse, but a powerful souped-up limousine.
On a trip to the Orient, Brett Reid saved the life of Kato. To repay this deed Kato offers to be Brett’s servant and they return to the USA. Kato is a car mechanic and a great driver. It is Kato who modifies Brett’s limousine into The Black Beauty, something of an arsenal on wheels. He is also well versed in martial arts.
Together The Green Hornet and Kato infiltrated mobsters, racketeers, Nazis and Communists. Of course they wore masks. Green masks! Now this is not unlike another masked vigilante and his “ethnic” partner – the famous Lone Ranger and Tonto.
The Green Hornet and Kato bare a resemblance to another masked vigilante and his trusted companion. It just happens that George W. Trendle also created The Lone Ranger, originally a radio show that debuted in 1933. The Lone Ranger is a masked Texas Ranger who is assisted by Tonto, his Indian friend. Fran Striker created the Tonto character and the Lone Ranger?s special silver bullets.
Now there is a connection between the character of The Lone Ranger and those of The Green Hornet. The Lone Ranger was the uncle of Dan Reid, Brett’s. Thus the Lone Ranger was the great-uncle of Brett Reid, The Green Hornet
Both The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet were spun off into comic books. The comic book version of The Green Hornet first appeared in December of 1940, published by Helnit Comics. These were written by Fran Striker and illustrated through the art house of Bert Whitman Associates. Helnit only published 6 issues and then Harvey Comics took over. Harvey published issues #7 through #47 that ran from 1940 until 1949.
A one of Green Hornet titled Four Color, came out in 1953 by Dell Comics. Three issues of The Green Hornet were put out in 1967 by Gold Key Comics.
The Green Hornet reappeared in NOW Comics in 1989 for 14 issues. These were drawn by Jeff Butler and written by Ron Fortier. NOW then started Volume Two, releasing forty issues from 1991 until 1995. NOW’s Green Hornet characters were various descendants of the original Brett Reid who had to retire because of a heart attack.
In 2010 Dynamite Entertainment came out with a new Green Hornet comic book series. This time the Green Hornet is Brett Reid Jr. When Brett Sr. is assassinated, Kato takes Brett Jr. to China where he is trained to become the new Green Hornet. This series is written by movie director Kevin Smith. It is a reworking of a Green Hornet screenplay he wrote, but that was never produced.
Seth Rogen’s new film The Green Hornet is the first original feature-length Green Hornet film. It takes place in modern day Los Angeles where playboy Brett Reid is publisher of The Daily Sentinel.
