There have been a number of programs and shows made on diverse themes and genres that have been liked a lot by the people. Such type of serials have largely been successful as they gather a wider audience, give the viewers the luxury of watching many things in a single show and also allow the actors to show their diverse acting skills. Such shows are therefore increasing in number day by day.

Law and Order is an American police and legal television series which premiered on 13 September 1990, and has been highly popular and successful. Unlike other crime investigation shows which show only the investigation process of catching the criminal by following the leads, Law and Order also shows the legal proceedings that occur after a criminal is caught to the point until which he has been prosecuted by the show. Thus, it shows the complete process right from the occurrence of a crime to the sentencing of the criminal.

Created by Dick Wolf, Law and Order was aired on NBC and it has completed 20 seasons till May 24, 2010 which total comprised of 456 successful episodes. The show with a total running time of 60 minutes had two halves where in the first half, New York City police detectives go about their job of solving a particular case by catching the criminal, in the second half the prosecution of the suspect by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office is shown. Many times the show has stories based on real cases which recently came in the news.

It is believed that before NBC begun the broadcasting for a full season of the show in 1990, Dick Wolf had to face a number of rejections form many broadcasting houses some of which did not like the idea, some thought that the idea would not work and would be rejected by the people while some wanted certain changes to the show which Dick Wolf thought would not be appropriate. He put new life into the genre of police procedural and legal drama by making it look more real and instead of defense; he made prosecution look the hero in court cases.

The way in which the show Law and Order has been liked by the people can be seen from the fact that there is a long list of awards it has won. Law and Order has won to name a few, Emmy awards in the category of Outstanding Cinematography for a Series Constantine Makris in 1997 and 1998, Outstanding Drama Series in1997 amongst others, NAACP Image wards in the category of Outstanding supporting actress in a drama series in 2006 and 2010, Writers guild award for best teleplay in 1998, Screen Actors guild award for outstanding actor in a drama series in 1999 and 2005. The show has received a number of nominations as well.

The best ranking of the show was in its 12th season which was 7th. The show got the maximum viewer ship in the same season of 18.7 million. The show had an average of 22 -24 episodes per season.

The DVDs for Law and Order of some seasons have been released in some regions. In region 1 the first seven as well as fourteenth season has been released. First seven seasons have been released in regions 2 and 4. There have been a number of videogames and books as well based on the show. The show is a must watch for mystery and drama lovers.

The” abortion” case is the most talked upon cases which has ever been aired on the 20 seasons of the crimes series “Law & Order” which has been telecasted for a considerable amount of time. Though the subject is very sensitive it has been discussed only twice in all the previous series of episodes. The much hyped episode shows a doctor who performs abortion operations being shot down in a church. The show starts with a disclaimer saying there is no resemblance to any real life incidents, however it has a great similarity to the DR. George R.Tiller case, who was a well known late-term abortion provider who was brutally shot down in a church in Wichita, Kan., on May 31.

From what transpires to be an issue of social importance, NBC has very intelligently drawn a fine line between promoting the episode and preserving the social importance amidst a large section of TV viewing audience which are often devoid of such real issues.

The NBC networks were ranked last this season among the four major broadcast networks amidst TV viewers and young adults. For promotion per se, executive producer and director of the series, Dick Wolf, was quite involved in distributing the screening copies to different writers calling it the most controversial episode of the series.

No episode generated as much response as the “dignity” episode did, not even the “life choice” which came in the first season and “progeny” that hit the screens in the fifth season. The episode has triggered a great deal of controversy with a section of people debating on the vigorous attempts taken by the cops and the district lawyers and other skeptical about their commitment in the case.

For about four decades now, the networks and advertisers have not touched this issue of abortion apart from the “dignity” episode. Last it was seen in an episode of “Maude” on CBS in 1972. The broadcast received a number of complaints and most advertisers shunned the episode when it was repeated during the summer.

Even the abortion episode from the “Family Guy” got stripped off air on similar grounds. Although Fox networks fully supported the producers’ right to make the episode and distribute it in whatever way they wanted to the “Family Guy” fans. The program’s producers sponsored a live reading of the script last summer to promote the show’s nomination for an Emmy for best comedy series, and they said it would be included on a DVD of the season’s episodes.

The senior vice president for broadcast television at MPG, Carrie Drinkwater, had already issued guidelines to most of the advertisers amidst speculations to the broadcast of the episode that they will not advertise on an episode of a show that deals with a topic like abortion. She also indicated the disinterest of many advertisers in airing the episode. She said that while her firm has some advertisers from “Law & Order” none had been scheduled to have commercial spots in the episode. A inquiry from an NBC executive revealed that the advertising was indeed sold for the episode with no mention of the advertising companies.
