After hearing this diddy many times during his ailment, little Chris began to ask his father questions about the rhyme. Where is the train going, Does it have a name?

To answer these typical youthful queries, Wilbert needed to think quick… Aha – he says, I’ll call the island sodor. It will be located in the Irish Sea between the British Isles and the Isle of Mann. This is how the adventure began.

Many are under the false pretense that Thomas was the first locomotive on the island. That’s not true. Although Thomas was one of the original trains in the early stories, it was Edward who began these tales spun by Rev. Audry. More than likely that’s why Edward is so loved on the Island.

The stories grew larger and more detailed. Additional locomotives where then tossed in the mix. Soon came Thomas, Percy, Lady, Henry, Smudger, James and a slew of others, each with personalities of their own.

1945 brought about the first publication of the now famed children’s books. In 1984 a television series was launched that propelled the little choo-choo even higher.The Books are still in publication, though the original writers, Rev. Wilbert Audry and his son Christopher whom inherited the honor in 1972. Rev Audry passed in 1997, he lived a rich vibrant 86 years.

In 1996 Christopher published his last book before handing over the series to professional children’s book publishers. Wilbert soon passed at the rich age of 86. Chris still enjoys his fathers stories and shares the tales with the rest of the world!

Nothing is more peaceful that grazing across beautiful acres of lush green land. Until the zombies, that’s right, zombies pop out of the ground faster than weeds! What to do? Zombie season is here and nothing is worse than not being ready.

Seth Grahame-Smith gave an insight to zombie preparation by taking a twist on Jane Austen’s book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The mystery of who is undead and who isn’t accompanies the basic story line. Don’t worry, the romantic story remains unblemished, except for the additional zombie action sequences.

The Bennett daughters remain in their same character, but are also trained zombie killers. Darcy is well known for his mass slaughter of the undead. The whole reason Netherfield Park becomes vacant is because of an unfortunate zombie attack. I found these to be humorous additions to the story indeed.

My initial response was very excited about this, but the more I read it, I unfortunately saw very little literary merit to it. Come to think of it, zombie movies don’t really have any value either. It’s fun and unique, but frankly it is a wee bit boring, even with zombies. There are some places that zombies just shouldn’t be, and Pemberly is one of them.

Seth Grahame-Smith obviously had just one intention with writing this. He wanted to take a classic tasteful novel and turn into a manfest. It would be like me writing a novel about James Bond, but instead of him being an international secret agent, he’s making potpourri. I admire your ambition and unique ideas, Seth, but Jane Austen is the novelist of the century for a reason. Read it for yourselves, but never let go of the original.

Better Roleplaying through D&D Character Background Creation

A great way to expand your roleplaying abilities in Dungeons & Dragons, or any other roleplaying game, is to try and make better characters. Developing a background and personality for your character will give you a better guideline on how to play your character and it will also give your Dungeon Master more hooks for their story and opportunities to role-play. We’re going to discuss a few ideas on how to easily create a better D&D character background by using simple plot hooks and personality traits. These methods can be altered to work with other roleplaying games as well.

Decide on one thing that your character would lay down his life for. It may be something noble, or it may be more self-serving. But pick something that your character would, under any circumstances, fight to the death over. It could be that anytime someone steals something from him, he will go to the ends of the earth to track them down and make them pay at any cost. Or, it could be that whenever his homeland is disrespected in conversation, he just cannot let it go. Whatever it is, choose this one carefully as it will turn out to be an extremely important part of your character.

Pick three things that your character will always fight for. These three things are things that will instantly cause the character to go into fight mode. He may not fight to the death over these, but he will always address them appropriately. Perhaps the player just can’t stand it when people insult him about his short stature. Or maybe he hates it when people make fun of any one of his adventuring comrades.

Pick one thing that your character absolutely fears. This fear can alter an adventure if a character runs into one of the fearsome obstacles that he feels he must avoid. You can take this character trait and write it at the top of your character sheet, so you will always be subtly reminded to play your character in that way.

Pick one additional character that is important to your character. This character could be another person in the party, or it could be an NPC. Then you need to define the relationship between your character and the other character. This could be a good connection, someone who has always been there to help you in your time of need. Or, it could be someone that always has a negative influence in your life. Maybe when you’re at your worst, this person seems to always show up and makes things even more miserable.

With these seven different characteristics, one thing that you will die for, the three things you will always fight for, and one thing that you are afraid of, and one characteristic that defines your personality, and one character that is important to you, you’ve instantly created a small amount of background, personality, and a play style for the characters. Answering these questions for your character dramatically increases the chance for fun and dramatic roleplaying opportunities in your game, as well as starting the foundation for your D&D character background.
