Facts are Stranger Than Fiction
Right off the bat, know that “Mona Lisa” is not the actual name of the painting. At least not according to its painter. da Vinci never called it by that name.
He actually declined to give it a name upon completing it (the first time) in 1507, despite working on it (the first time) for over four years.
“Mona Lisa” (the name) was a creation of painter Giorgio Vasari in 1550. He surmised that the woman in the portrait was Lisa Gherardini, the young wife of a wealthy Florence silk merchant and called it “Madam Lisa” in Italian — or Mona Lisa.
You Are Mine, All Mine!
In a strange move, da Vinci kept the painting for himself. Whoever commissioned the painting never received it. It’s not even known for sure that anyone actually did commission it. Leonardo was a commercial artist who paid the bills by painting — so this is quite a strange move.
Historic records show that da Vinci took Mona with him everywhere he went and that he often “retouched” it over and over until his death in 1519.
Great Art Lives
After Leonardo’s death, the King of France bought the painting and it stayed in the royal family for more than 200 years. During the French Revolution the masterpiece was moved to its current home, The Louvre.

1. “A Wrinkle in Time”. This book written by Madeleine L’Engle focused on a make-believed world and fantasy that no one would want to leave. (Sounds the same with J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts?) A young girl’s search for her father is the plot of this story. It was banned because of its mechanisms such as hocus-pocus, witchcraft, and crystal balls. When the name of Jesus Christ was used coinciding with those of well-known artists like philosophers, religious artists, scientists, and some great ones, it was banned all the more so.
2. “A Light in the Attic” (Shel Silverstein). This book is a lighthearted one meant for children. So, why was it banned if it is for children? Because of its contents that are considered inappropriate for children. A Florida school even commented that the book really promoted “violence, horror, disrespect.” In fact, according to some people, the majority of its content even encouraged and endorsed disobedience and what’s more, and messiness. And this triggered the parents into requesting for the banning even more.
3. “The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn” (Mark Twain). This book from Twain is considered a masterpiece and one of his best ever written; sensational and well-known too.
