Book Review: A Cold Breed

“A Cold Breed” by Casey O’Ryan, introduces us to Debra Jean, a flawed but morally rooted woman whose independent movement through her life and demanding job leave her surrounded by little more than acquaintances and a wonder of what her next chapter in life will bring.
Set in Virginia, Debra Jean, while her name infers otherwise, is no Southern belle. DJ, rather, is a strong woman whose foiling of a robbery in the frenetic opening pages of this book, shows not only a stubborn nature, but a woman who is not going to take things lying down. That is her would be mugger’s job.
While the book begins like a cannon shot, you are also drawn immediately into the wit and subtle banter that DJ possesses as she meets the police officer who stumbles upon the attempted assault. Detective Max Swain jumps from the pages with a young Sam Elliott swagger, tempered with an educated erudition. The romantic sparks jump from the pages they share until the closing of the first chapter.
In this thriller, however, romance must wait. DJ’s day job as a high-tech security consultant who is not afraid to get dirty as she runs coaxial cables through oven-baked attics in the Virginia summer, keeps her busy. While she could afford employees it is quite clear that she is a believer in, “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing yourself”. Tuesday nights provide a great opportunity for Max and her to approach this inevitable romance, though, DJ reserves these for her adoptive “Auntie” as they prepare gourmet meals together and discuss the darker sides of the human condition that DJ sees each day in her work.
This darkness of the soul is no more clearer than when DJ is called for an emergency installation job at the backwood’s dwelling of Travis Bitter. Bitter as the name suggests is just not one of the good guys. Nor, for that matter, are his equally sadistic sons. DJ ,in her work, stumbles across a number of things that she is forced to ignore for the success of her business but what she sees at the Bitter’s is something she can not let go of, nor allow to continue.
The magnitude of cruelty she witnesses at the Bitter’s puppy mill simply cannot stand. It is a cruelty that would allow many dog-loving readers to comfortably take their dog to a kennel owned by Michael Vick with a clear conscience. The tension is palpable, the writing, while often heart-wrenchingly tough to read, is necessary and flowing. The ending brings all the characters together in a mesmerizing read of goodish versus pure evil with a surprising twist that would have done Chubby Checker proud.
The ASPCA will certainly welcome the purchase of this Debra Jean thriller, as 10% of the author’s proceeds from this book will be donated to this group. Book Review: New Management

Santiago Contreras’ New Management is a science fiction thriller that revolves around thematic components of alien progenitors, dangerous trans human experimentation, multiple dimensions, and the anti-New World Order. New Management is certainly a worthwhile read for all Sci-Fi fans, space/alien aficionados, and anyone who wants to be spellbound by the sheer force of this novel.
One aspect of the content that resonates strongly is the gradual build-up, or disquieting progression of the book. There is a distinctly dark undertone at the beginning that grows and grows, imbued with ignorance and arrogance that culminate in demonic possession. A fascinating aspect of New Management is the creativity with the character nomenclature each character one with whom the reader can identify. Also, Contreras implements a unique “first-name” only style–for most of the characters–that provides intrigue and added emphasis to the plot.
The main character of New Management, Jobe, is a double-crossing, lawless nineteen-year-old with no regard for society. However, a wrinkle to his character is that he essentially leads two lives: one in which he is a bona fide criminal–robbing drug dealers in Detroit, Michigan–and the other where he portrays the ideal son, smart and with a bright future ahead of him.
When Jobe finds himself facing a UFO, or so he thinks, he becomes a man possessed, in search of the truth. In fact, he loses himself to such an extent that he cuts a deal with the dark underworld of Luciferic Technology. What happens from there is chilling and profoundly dark, but done in a mesmerizing manner that it is sure to captivate.
On a holistic level, New Management is a book about peaking curiosity and a lack of control, ultimately succumbing to our darkest, innermost qualities. However, Contreras’ overarching theme is one of awakening, or resurrection.
Ultimately, this is a harrowing tale of deceit and lies, on a otherworldly level, and a grand battle between dark forces and the inherent goodness of man. While New Management was never intended for an audience, its journey from darkness into the lights of the readers’ homes is eerily indicative of the theme of the text itself. Contreras leaves his readers with this message: “Grow more flowers,” and while it can be interpreted in myriad ways, it exudes positive energy–a return to innocence and true liberation. Book Review: Mystery, Politics, and Love

Flying Fish by Vern Hobbs is a story based on possibilities–possibilities between diverse and often opposing individuals who interact daily. It’s based on the possibilities of hope in the wake of struggle, and even the possibilities of a new way of life in a Florida coastal town with big problems.
The central character is Stan “Smiley” Rudolph, the quiet editor of the local newspaper in Juniper Key, Florida. Soon Smiley, and the whole town discover something shocking. A deceptively worded ballot has banned commercial fishing in their town, robbing most of the townspeople of their livelihood. All this happens as shady real estate developers move into town, claiming to have the solution to the town’s monetary struggles.
Smiley finds himself in an odd position when the ghost of a long-dead community icon pays him a visit, and presents a message outlining just how to save the town. And it’s not going to be easy. The only way for the town to recover is to trust the ideas and people they blame for all of their problems. Smiley then finds himself as the unlikely savior of the town of staunchly conservative people, all while dealing with his own demons. Hobbs vividly portrays the toiling daily lives of Florida’s traditional watermen–fishermen, crabbers, and clammers–all with a keen eye for detail.
Author Vern Hobbs is a commercial pilot. At first, it might seem an unexpected combination for a commercial pilot to also be a writer. On the contrary, he writes with a sense of grace that is easy to picture as an airplane gliding through the clouds. Hobbs’ writing has been featured in nationally distributed magazines and as a bi-monthly column. His characters, most notably Smiley, are compelling and original, his plot riveting. The Florida Wildlife Federation has even decided to sell his book on their website to help raise awareness and funds to support Florida’s changing ecosystem.
