Book Publishing and ISBNs … Are They Necessary?
Will an author need ISBNs? Yes, if you plan to sell your book. But, most probably no is you simply are creating something that is not for re-sale-from the history of the family to your high school reunion. How many must you get… one for your book or are the others still needed? What about book formats such as eBooks? The answers to the top queries I most often get are explained below:
Should an ISBN be part of an eBook?
“It depends” is most probably the response of many people. You must have an ISBN if you want to have your eBook available for iPad readers. Always keep in mind that an ISBN is your ID that the book retail world will see. It is a requirement for your book to be available in bookstores and even with distributors and wholesalers. Amazon will not require you since you will have an Amazon ASIN number, which stands for Amazon Standard Book Number. If you have an ISBN, you will need to enter that number when publishing with them, simply click on the upload image tab. For others like B&N’s new PubIt, it is not required, they will simply assign you a number.
“It depends,” is technically correct but if there’s just one format that requires it the answer is YES. My advice: just do it and if you have a print edition, put both ISBNs on the (c) page stating which is which.
Can one ISBN be used for print and eBook formats?
Concisely – no. Every ISBN is unique and should have its own identity. Put in mind that an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the Social Security number of your book. This is simply a magic number that notes whatever is selling. Be cautious of transacting with publishers who simply collects all books and register them all together with only a master ISBN so they can be sold to different outlets like the Amazon. What is the other name of them? Criminals. Such practice have been evident in some vanity presses.
The International ISBN Agency recommends that publishers assign ISBNs to each format. That means print, eBook, audio, video and anything else that comes along.
What is the required number of ISBNs that I need to get?
Start with 10 (it’s cheaper to buy them this way). Go straight to www.Bowker.com and purchase them for $275 (includes process fee). It identifies your “publishing house” and gives you enough to cover the current edition, as well as any revised. Keep in mind: you need a different number for each format-hardback; paperback; audio; video; eBook, etc. If your book goes from hardback to paper, it’s another number. If you revise your book or create a new edition, it’s a new number.

Tips To Get Through College Level Statistics Courses
Well the new college year has rolled around and there has been 1 college class which nine out of ten college students actually hate. It is the subject Elementary Statistics, Statistics, or whatever you desire to call it. Almost every student in college will struggle with this study of complex math which includes graphs, models, theories, probabilities, and more. For those college students that will have to take this course this year, there are sites on the internet that will be wonderful resources and possibly your best friend in time of need.
If you have already taken a Statistics course before entering college then you are already aware of the amount of work needed to complete those problems. In high school you are simply given an introduction which still has its issues while college takes matters to an additional level. There is another degree of understanding and much larger degree of complexity with math problems. It is all geared to help you better comprehend how the real world operates.
Inside the real world stats are all about us. As we look at the headcount inside the United States there is a broad limit of statistical mathematics used to analyze population, discover movements, help observe population increases within certain segments of the country, and more. Another realm to think of how statistics are used is supply and demand. A lot of the complex equations and probability theories are put in use to observe our financial system, commerce, price changes, manufactured goods trends, and so forth.
So, with those brief examples of the importance of statistics and how it is used students should come to know why the course is required. It is true that all college students may need additional support away from the classroom to grasp a good conception of stats. Even the scholars that make the highest grades find this particular class to be a challenge to them and they have to practice at lots of illustrations to get their problems right.
The help found for college courses like Elementary Statistics is definitely found on the internet and without question from a local tutor. There are lots of college scholars or scholars that have previously graduated who can assist other scholars with understanding those difficult problems. There are some other college students, preferably the Math majors, who can really be useful with helping others perform well in this course. All colleges offer tutoring services and my advice to any person that is getting ready to take a Statistics class is please think about a tutor. A tutor should be considered regardless if you are already doing well or not. There is going to be a time or situation while taking the class that you are challenged with math problem that you won’t know what to do.
If you have difficulty finding a consistent person to sit with you and go over the material then always consider the internet. There are lots of internet sites and maybe online training sites that will be there for you 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Two popular books are Elementary Statistics Picturing The World and Elementary Statistics A Step By Step Approach.
Could Your Book Become A Movie? Screenwriting Secrets For Authors
Whether it’s a true story or a novel, most authors dream of having their book become a Hollywood movie. In fact, a high percentage of movies started out as books, comic books or graphic novels. According to Internet Movie Data Base, over 22,000 movies have been made from books. So far.
If this is your dream, read on. One way to increase your chances of having your book turned into a movie is to write the screenplay version of the book. Producers prefer reading a script to reading books because they take less time to read. Most scripts are 90 – 120 pages, with a lot of white space.
If you’re considering writing your own screenplay, here are some things to keep in mind:
1. You must write the proper length (see above). Scripts that are too long or too short are immediately thrown away.
2. You must learn proper screenplay format. There are books that will teach you this. If your script does not follow proper format, it will be tossed without any consideration.
3. You must get the Hollywood reader’s attention in less than 10 pages. This may mean adapting the beginning of your story. If you don’t get their attention and interest soon, they move on to the next script.
4. A screenplay can only contain what can be shown on the screen — action and dialogue. Unlike a novel, you can’t write about what the character is thinking. But you can reveal their emotions and thoughts through action and dialogue.
5. Every scene must move the story forward in some way.
6. Be sure you don’t “direct” the script. That is, don’t put in camera angles or suggest particular songs to play in the background. Those are the director’s prerogatives.
7. Consider eliminating subplots and combining two or more characters into one, that is, create composite characters, if there are a lot of people in your book.
8. Try to keep the dialogue short. Novels have much more freedom in that regard.
9. If you don’t already do so, watch lots of movies with the intent of noticing what works and what doesn’t. It will help you become a better screenwriter.
10. Keep in mind that a book is not a movie and a movie is not a book. They have different needs and different rules for success. Keep the above in mind and you will be more successful at adapting your book into a movie.

Some Measures To Help You Stay Away From Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a very serious offence that can even lead to one being discontinued from many academic institutions. Plagiarism basically means the duplication of another person’s work without acknowledging it.
Whether on purpose whereby you have decided to go ahead and to copy someone’s work or accidental whereby you use somebody’s work without being aware of it at all, plagiarism can break up your academic career.
Below are some ways to keep away from plagiarism:
Stating your sources might sound very basic. You can blame it either on unawareness or slothfulness but you will be surprised at the number of students who simply do not refer to their sources.
Often, students are just so relieved to finally complete a paper that they fail to remember to refer to the sources as they are winding up. Furthermore, a student might not be cognizant that he has to mention the source when he makes use of somebody’s work.
It is important for you to take time to carefully go through your paper after you write it down as it is very easy for references from other works to move stealthily into the paper without your notice.
Delete immediately from the paper any words or sentences that you believe were lifted from another place else either willfully or unknowingly since there is no difference between deliberate or inadvertent plagiarism.
You should not feel lured to replace even a single letter from the original work if you are contemplating paraphrasing somebody else’s work. You are required to use their exact words in the paper and it would be great if you would always wrap it up in quotes as you mention your sources either at the end or in-line.
You should carefully revise your paper before submitting it because if you are lazy with it, the penalty for any mistakes found on plagiarism could be catastrophic. It is however easy to avoid this if you recognize the regulations to follow and go through your paper consistently.

What New Suspense Fiction Books You Should Check Out
I can venture a guess that if you are looking into a particular piece like this one, that you are an avid and enthusiastic reader of suspense fiction books. You might be out of the material that your favorite authors have written and are looking to branch out with a new author that you might not have heard of before.
Yes, for the sake of this article in particular, you should be introduced to two of the better novels by one particular author. This way, you are going to be able to determine for yourself whether the author seems like someone that you could enjoy reading or not. For this article, the author that you are going to be introduced to will be Ted Dekker, and you will be introduced to two of his most popular pieces of suspense fiction.
As was said, these will be two of the most popular works of fiction that Dekker has released, and the first on this list to many might be the novel “Thr3e”. This was good enough to make into a major motion picture, if that says anything. It centers around Kevin, a man who has recently completed seminary only to be in the cross hairs of an attack on his character and moral standing.
This becomes quite a wicked game of cat and mouse as Kevin struggles to stay alive and learn what he must to stop Slater. Through the story you are given plenty of twists and turns so that by the end you never would have guessed where you ended up. No one is quite who they appear to be, and that makes for one excellent suspense fiction novel.
The next on the short list of Dekker’s popular pieces would be “Adam” which is the story centering on a Special Agent in the FBI. He is saddled with catching a budding serial killer who has already killed 15 women, one on each new moon. With a new moon on the horizon, the time is drawing nigh to catch the killer before he strikes again.
The agent nearly catches the killer, but it almost nearly costs him his life. His memory of the killer fails him for those brief moments when he was presumably dead. Now, his wife is going to be the next victim of Eve, unless he can catch the murderer. How can he do this you might ask? Well, by dying over and over again to put the pieces together and remember the killer in order to catch him.
If you have never heard of Ted Dekker before, you should certainly take a little bit of time to check out one of his novels. His style of writing and pacing are unlike many in the genre. He can turn a tale that makes you unsure of anyone and everyone until the conclusion, which is the perfect set up for suspense fiction books.

Book Marketing Now That You Have Your Story
I understand how you feel. You might have spent a whole lot of money and time to make your dream a reality. What I’m talking about is taking your book from an idea to a complete product and you would like to sell a bunch of books now!
First thing you must do is wrap your brain around is being an author is really a labor of love. You don’t go from nameless to the bestsellers list. That is not to say that it hasn’t happened. It just doesn’t occur that frequently.
You should be a walking sandwich board telling people about your book. Never leave home without them!
There are lots of steps that you need to look at to be able to persuade somebody to buy your book. It’s important to locate a distributor, build up a Press Kit, schedule book signings, launch a website online, develop a press release.
This is simply the tip of the iceberg as well as watered down version. Each step has several extra steps to make it complete.
For instance, scheduling a book signing. You make contact with the events manager or community relations manager & chat with them regarding the book, the author, plus your wish to schedule a book signing.
They sometimes require to see a copy of the book before they commit which means you send them a copy with a cover letter. Give it about 2 weeks and telephone back to schedule. You should always schedule a few months a head so you have got time to send some promotional material.
You should work like a team with the bookstore so that the occasion is successful for everyone involved. If the signing is successful then the following time you phone and want to schedule a signing the bookstore will welcome you with open arms and you will sell a ton of books!

The earliest type of crime fiction writing was discovered to be in the early 19th century. Historical Crime Fiction Is A Trip In Time
Sherlock Holmes may be the character that pops in to your mind when you think of historical crime fiction. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle delivered him to readers for the first time in 1887. Conan Doyle, an author and physician created the genius crime-solver Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson worked at his side throughout each novel and story. They waded through numerous mysterious murders up until the final case, published in 1914.
Sherlock Holmes was working for Scotland Yard as a consulting detective. Conan Doyle wrote fifty-six short stories and four novels using Holmes as the protagonist. The character was fashioned after a doctor he had once worked for, Dr. Joseph Bell, who ran the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Before Holmes was introduced to the public, Edgar Allan Poe wrote historical crime fiction stories in the 1840s. Poe wrote three stories featuring C. Auguste Dupin as a famous detective. These stories were considered the first written in that genre. Who can ever forget that astonishing poem, “The Raven?” Poe is also famous for all the Gothic horror tales such as “The Pendulum.”
Poe’s character, C. Auguste Dupin, has often been named the first fictional detective ever created. “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” was written in 1841. Most authorities consider this short story, to be the first detective story. He continued the Dupin protagonist with “The Mystery of Marie Roget” and finally, “The Purloined Letter”, which contained no murder to solve. In it, Dupin prevents a blackmail scheme from being carried out.
Man has been murdering man as far back as ancient Roman times when Brutus killed Caesar. There were no detectives to step in and solve the murder. If there had been, an appropriate quote might have been, “the politicians did it.”
In Arabian Nights, Scheherazade (of ancient Persia) told the story of the Three Apples.” The dismembered body of a young woman was found in a trunk. Shahryar ordered his subordinate, Ja’far to solve the crime in three days or face execution. The suspenseful story was a prototype of the later written murder mysteries, with one difference. The only motivation Jaf’ar had to solve the murder was saving his own life.
The reader of historical crime fiction should be taken on a journey back through time. He should feel the essence of Scotland Yard in England during the era Sherlock Holmes lived and worked in. He will share the desperation of the young Scheherazad as she struggles to invent new stories to prevent Shahryar from having her beheaded. Remember his habit of marrying a virgin one day and having her beheaded the next? When one reads an historical novel, one should be drawn into the scene and feel how those people experienced life. One should have a sense of anticipation until the protagonist solves the murder and brings the story to its conclusion.
