Book Publishing and ISBNs … Are They Necessary?

Will an author need ISBNs? Yes, if you plan to sell your book. But, most probably no is you simply are creating something that is not for re-sale-from the history of the family to your high school reunion. How many must you get… one for your book or are the others still needed? What about book formats such as eBooks? The answers to the top queries I most often get are explained below:

Should an ISBN be part of an eBook?

“It depends” is most probably the response of many people. You must have an ISBN if you want to have your eBook available for iPad readers. Always keep in mind that an ISBN is your ID that the book retail world will see. It is a requirement for your book to be available in bookstores and even with distributors and wholesalers. Amazon will not require you since you will have an Amazon ASIN number, which stands for Amazon Standard Book Number. If you have an ISBN, you will need to enter that number when publishing with them, simply click on the upload image tab. For others like B&N’s new PubIt, it is not required, they will simply assign you a number.

“It depends,” is technically correct but if there’s just one format that requires it the answer is YES. My advice: just do it and if you have a print edition, put both ISBNs on the (c) page stating which is which.

Can one ISBN be used for print and eBook formats?

Concisely – no. Every ISBN is unique and should have its own identity. Put in mind that an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the Social Security number of your book. This is simply a magic number that notes whatever is selling. Be cautious of transacting with publishers who simply collects all books and register them all together with only a master ISBN so they can be sold to different outlets like the Amazon. What is the other name of them? Criminals. Such practice have been evident in some vanity presses.

The International ISBN Agency recommends that publishers assign ISBNs to each format. That means print, eBook, audio, video and anything else that comes along.

What is the required number of ISBNs that I need to get?

Start with 10 (it’s cheaper to buy them this way). Go straight to www.Bowker.com and purchase them for $275 (includes process fee). It identifies your “publishing house” and gives you enough to cover the current edition, as well as any revised. Keep in mind: you need a different number for each format-hardback; paperback; audio; video; eBook, etc. If your book goes from hardback to paper, it’s another number. If you revise your book or create a new edition, it’s a new number.

It is the subject Elementary Statistics, Statistics, or whatever you desire to call it. Could Your Book Become A Movie? Screenwriting Secrets For Authors

Whether it’s a true story or a novel, most authors dream of having their book become a Hollywood movie. In fact, a high percentage of movies started out as books, comic books or graphic novels. According to Internet Movie Data Base, over 22,000 movies have been made from books. So far.

If this is your dream, read on. One way to increase your chances of having your book turned into a movie is to write the screenplay version of the book. Producers prefer reading a script to reading books because they take less time to read. Most scripts are 90 – 120 pages, with a lot of white space.

If you’re considering writing your own screenplay, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. You must write the proper length (see above). Scripts that are too long or too short are immediately thrown away.

2. You must learn proper screenplay format. There are books that will teach you this. If your script does not follow proper format, it will be tossed without any consideration.

3. You must get the Hollywood reader’s attention in less than 10 pages. This may mean adapting the beginning of your story. If you don’t get their attention and interest soon, they move on to the next script.

4. A screenplay can only contain what can be shown on the screen — action and dialogue. Unlike a novel, you can’t write about what the character is thinking. But you can reveal their emotions and thoughts through action and dialogue.

5. Every scene must move the story forward in some way.

6. Be sure you don’t “direct” the script. That is, don’t put in camera angles or suggest particular songs to play in the background. Those are the director’s prerogatives.

7. Consider eliminating subplots and combining two or more characters into one, that is, create composite characters, if there are a lot of people in your book.

8. Try to keep the dialogue short. Novels have much more freedom in that regard.

9. If you don’t already do so, watch lots of movies with the intent of noticing what works and what doesn’t. It will help you become a better screenwriter.

10. Keep in mind that a book is not a movie and a movie is not a book. They have different needs and different rules for success. Keep the above in mind and you will be more successful at adapting your book into a movie.

The agent nearly catches the killer, but it almost nearly costs him his life. His memory of the killer fails him for those brief moments when he was presumably dead. Now, his wife is going to be the next victim of Eve, unless he can catch the murderer. How can he do this you might ask? Well, by dying over and over again to put the pieces together and remember the killer in order to catch him.

If you have never heard of Ted Dekker before, you should certainly take a little bit of time to check out one of his novels. His style of writing and pacing are unlike many in the genre. He can turn a tale that makes you unsure of anyone and everyone until the conclusion, which is the perfect set up for suspense fiction books.

Historical Crime Fiction Is A Trip In Time

Sherlock Holmes may be the character that pops in to your mind when you think of historical crime fiction. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle delivered him to readers for the first time in 1887. Conan Doyle, an author and physician created the genius crime-solver Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson worked at his side throughout each novel and story. They waded through numerous mysterious murders up until the final case, published in 1914.

Sherlock Holmes was working for Scotland Yard as a consulting detective. Conan Doyle wrote fifty-six short stories and four novels using Holmes as the protagonist. The character was fashioned after a doctor he had once worked for, Dr. Joseph Bell, who ran the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Before Holmes was introduced to the public, Edgar Allan Poe wrote historical crime fiction stories in the 1840s. Poe wrote three stories featuring C. Auguste Dupin as a famous detective. These stories were considered the first written in that genre. Who can ever forget that astonishing poem, “The Raven?” Poe is also famous for all the Gothic horror tales such as “The Pendulum.”

Poe’s character, C. Auguste Dupin, has often been named the first fictional detective ever created. “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” was written in 1841. Most authorities consider this short story, to be the first detective story. He continued the Dupin protagonist with “The Mystery of Marie Roget” and finally, “The Purloined Letter”, which contained no murder to solve. In it, Dupin prevents a blackmail scheme from being carried out.

Man has been murdering man as far back as ancient Roman times when Brutus killed Caesar. There were no detectives to step in and solve the murder. If there had been, an appropriate quote might have been, “the politicians did it.”

In Arabian Nights, Scheherazade (of ancient Persia) told the story of the Three Apples.” The dismembered body of a young woman was found in a trunk. Shahryar ordered his subordinate, Ja’far to solve the crime in three days or face execution. The suspenseful story was a prototype of the later written murder mysteries, with one difference. The only motivation Jaf’ar had to solve the murder was saving his own life.

The reader of historical crime fiction should be taken on a journey back through time. He should feel the essence of Scotland Yard in England during the era Sherlock Holmes lived and worked in. He will share the desperation of the young Scheherazad as she struggles to invent new stories to prevent Shahryar from having her beheaded. Remember his habit of marrying a virgin one day and having her beheaded the next? When one reads an historical novel, one should be drawn into the scene and feel how those people experienced life. One should have a sense of anticipation until the protagonist solves the murder and brings the story to its conclusion.
