Parents cannot just depend on formal schooling to impart all knowledge and skills to their children from here on out. They must at least establish a strong foundation of basic knowledge and skills to their children even before the child starts with formal education. This activity also increases the child’s initial vocabulary since they can also attach the meanings to the words as well.

After providing the child with background knowledge on the how various words sound when pronounced, the next step on how to teach a child to read is to slowly break down the words into letters and how each letter is pronounced. Parents can do this with the use of the sequence of letters in the alphabet or by teaching vowels and consonants separately and later creating phonetic blends such as ba, be, bi, bo, bu and so on and so forth.

An important thing to remember in knowing how to teach a child to read is to never forget that they are still children. It is important for parents to just keep it simple and basic since there is no urgent need for children to learn complicated words since they have no use for it for the time being. And instead of bombarding the child with a lot of words to learn, stick to a small number of simple words which the child can easily use in school and home, and continuously repeat in order for them to absorb and memorize.

In order to reinforce the child’s energy to learn and not be easily distracted or be tired, a helpful way on how to teach a child to read is to provide certain rewards such as toys, stars, etc. Young children are easily distracted, bored and frustrated, and it is important that parents maintain reading activities as enjoyable and interesting as possible.

Most children tend to act more aggressively under strict control by parents. Therefore it is important for parents in knowing how to teach a child to read to just let them be. Parents can provide easy-to-read books for children to start reading on their own. Parents can serve as guide and help if and when the child starts to have a hard time.

These steps on how to teach a child to read aren’t entirely restricted within the comforts of the home. Such simple reading exercises can be extended in other leisure activities of the family such as going to the mall, driving, and so on and so forth. Parents can encourage the children to read simple signs in order to make leisure time a learning experience as well.

In the end, the most important step in knowing how to teach a child to read lies within the parents’ ability to maintain composure and patience to impart basic knowledge and skills to their children which will serve as the ground on which their education will be built.

Not As Marketed – Family Book Critique

Palin believes that the United States can return as leader in global greatness by following the principles the original founding fathers set out in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Recent administrations have drifted far from these principles. She is fulfilling such a necessary role by promoting TRUE conservatism and fostering our ability to promote real change. By doing this, the RIGHT person for the job has the best chance of being elected. Although his plans were not adopted in totality, they did form the basic outline for American development.

How Ms Palin or her ghost writer could ignore all of this is a bad sign for the quality of the rest of the book which I will not waste my time reading. Governor Palin has done something which few politicians dare to do these days: discuss what makes America an exceptional nation.

It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, as least as it has been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted it the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Second, I stopped reading at page 140 as I’d had enough of the exaggerations and flat-out lies in this book. Contrary to negative reviewers who have tried to stack the deck against Sarah Palin with phony reviews, my honest opinion is that Sarah is getting better with each book she writes. The book is honest and sincere, and very enjoyable.

I needed a “pick-me-up”. I bought America by heart and my attitude adjustment started and with each page I got happier and happier. The book was well written and is what America is all about. I hear the liberal naysayers complaining so it is obvious the book is a success. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but she pushes hers as more than just an opinion, she treats them as facts. Lots of assertions, no facts, and unsurprisingly disappoints. Sarah Palin is the happy warrior that takes on the Left in her book “America by Heart”. This book leaves no doubt to where Sarah Palin stands on issues. In the most straightforward manner possible Sarah lays out the philosophy of commonsense constitutional conservatism. The plainspoken style reinforces the principled message.

Save your money and your time. Liberals will likely form an opinion without reading it, as will conservatives who don’t like Palin.

People of faith and hope are following her. Save your money unless you want a good laugh. The amazing Sarah Palin continues to shine in her latest book.

Finally The Good Stuff – Family Beliefs Book Review

The constitution of the United States prohibits certain actions including prohibiting an “establishment of religion”. By the way, Palin states that a cross on public land doesn’t violate the constitution because it doesn’t establish a religion.

In both message and style it is nearly the polar opposite of the “Dreams” book that Bill Ayers wrote for Obama. In that more literary (and to be fair well written) book the messages of social justice and victim-hood were artfully woven into a Homeric tale that (intentionally) sacrificed clarity for literary style.

This book is really bad. I could spend hours writing a formal critique with more erudite adjectives, but I truly don’t know where to begin. This book reads like a sales pitch and a 300-page infomercial for the author. I can’t tell if she’s setting herself up for a run in 2012 or to continue her wildly lucrative speaking business. This book was written for the obvious purpose of monetary gain, not much different from any other book by politicians at this time in history. Superb, excellent, loved every page!

First, I got this book from the library.

The liberals can’t relate to anyone that doesn’t mimic their ridiculous message. According to the liberals every democratic president or candidate is so intelligent and the conservative candidates are all stupid and probably cheated in school if they do have a good educational background.

It features interesting stories, many quotes from others to make her points, well written. If you hate Sarah Palin, you will hate this book.

There is an anti-partisan rebellion building in the U.S. I doubt there will be little tolerance for hyper-partisan candidates in the next election, so why she has chosen this path is a mystery to me.

These young people feel entitled to jobs and salaries they haven’t earned. And now, her daughter has made many more thousands of dollars on Dancing with the Stars. I was impressed by Palin after finishing this. If you hate her, don’t bother educating yourself about her beliefs; just keep on with the mindless bashing. Here I go for a second time and although my feelings have not changed since I first read the book, I’ll have to change the review a bit. I was told that someone complained about the quotes I used. It’s the kind of life that shapes a character that stays confident, strong, and *happy* whether the economy is up or down, whether she’s making a million dollars or minimum wage, whether her child gets into college or has Down’s Syndrome. And that honestly was what I thought was the main weakness of the book.

From a first grade teacher of 25 years, who loves America, I find it thrilling to read my sentiments exactly; she nailed it on the head. I remember the patriotic feeling, being 6 years old myself and being almost able to touch Eisenhower as he proceeded through our parade in Wichita, KS.

Really, how had her breadth of study and knowledge not been known – was she hiding this in 2008 or has she spent the last 2 years studying – in between book tour, Tea Party and speaking appearances, filming a reality show and being a Fox News commentator? Now it seems apparent (to me) that she read and relied heavily on Spalding’s book, adding those folksy touches that her fan base loves.

The charter school movement essentially provides no benefit to the majority of students. This book is a “must read” for anyone interested in the future of American education. So unsuccessful has this strategy been that Mr Gates has now abandoned it throughout the nation. Many experts, Dr Ravitch among them, could have told Mr Gates that the problem wasn’t the high schools. Now, she claims to have such knowledge. However, she does an excellent job now with explaining the problems with her original plan when she was a member of the Bush administration.

For this reader, the chapter on these foundations (aptly titled “The Billionaire Boys’ Club”) was the most revealing and disturbing one in the entire book. In her final chapter, “Lessons Learned,” Ms Ravitch makes her case for what needs to be done at this point. As she always has, Dr Ravitch believes in high standards, a rigorous curriculum, treating teachers with respect and never straying from the truth – which is why she has become critical of testing programs that have fostered a culture of lies and exaggeration. And she backs up her positions – old and new – with convincing data and perceptive analysis. What happens to students that commit crimes or do not regularly attend school? They are sent to the local public school.

She also attacks major financial education philanthropies, such as Bill Gates, and shows that simply throwing money at schools doesn’t work if it’s put in all the wrong places. As a teacher, I was fascinated by her research and perspective. So in trying to improve a school we often dynamite the highest achieving classes. That makes no sense.

I found it admirable that Ravitch risked black-listing herself with these organizations (after all, they often generously fund the kind of research that Ravitch conducts) in order to bring to our attention why we should be wary of their involvement in shaping educational policy. Make no mistake, this book isn’t meant to be an attack on the right or on Republicans. It has nothing to do with ideology, agenda, or “politics.” As a teacher from “the trenches” who has kept an open mind over 35 years of classroom experience and endorsed ideas solely on their proven merit in practice, I am awed by Ravitch’s perfect grasp not only of research, but the reality “in the field.”

It really took courage to do what she did, being pro-charter, pro-testing, and deciding to change her mind. Most people in uppity positions in the government like that never change their minds.

To her mind, closing schools “accelerates a sense of transiency and impermanence, while dismissing the values of continuity and tradition, which children, families and communities need as anchors in their lives.” I saw this at work recently with the closing of a high school in my old Bronx neighborhood, a school from which both my mother and wife were graduated. There is an area that she omitted from her review of reforms. Career academies may not raise test scores, but they do substantially increase the high school graduation rate. Thank you for understanding that education takes time and thought and effort on the part of the students, the teachers, the parents, the administration and the society. It is not something that one can shop for and purchase at the nearest Walmart or Target!

Excellent Price For What It Provides – Career Paths Book Review

Thoreau, the classic American minimalist, covered all the same material far more eloquently 150 years ago. So why not read Thoreau instead” There are obstacles for the likelihood of the 4 hour workweek: the size of the American family has decreased but the size of housing (square feet) has increased dramatically. There is a cost in keeping up with the Joneses. So all you have to do is follow his blueprint and you can make millions working four hours a week! Many of my Internet marketing clients scooped up this book and started singing its praises without implementing anything except Ferriss’ advice on limiting e-mail usage. The first two sections of T4HWW make some very valid points. Ferriss argues that, for most, the ideal life is much cheaper than it might seem.

The real world just doesn’t offer that type of flexibility unless you dump your spouse, your children, and your pets. The book is worth getting but don’t consider it to be a miracle cure for what’s wrong with your present situation.

If it does, it will distort the message of the book, for it would require that Ferriss trade in his “New Rich” lifestyle to be back in the rat race on a quest for the millions that he claims are not necessary to achieve one’s dreams. Perhaps that’s the real lesson to be learned from the book: no matter where you are, the grass always seems greener on the other side. Oh, it’s possible but unlikely. Tim is no Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, or Clint Eastwood he is nowhere close to them.

Because those four know that true success comes from years of hard work, and building lasting relationships with people. Those four know that decreasing your work hours, outsourcing your life, and making tons of money is not the road to true happiness.

Now the toy was a “tickle me Elmo” and it was apparently a much in demand product. The assistant could only find a “Chicken Dance Elmo” and ordered it. He did have a company BrainQuicken which sells “Neural Accelerator” supplements. The site is 99% advertising and 1% scientific: It sells because it’s precisely that. It’s obvious that the author is living his life without any true responsibility which means most people can’t follow his suggestions. You’d be better off spending your money on Lottery tickets and daydreaming. One of the most universal causes of self-doubt and depression: Trying to impress people you don’t like (this one really hit home with me, hard). I should not invest in public stocks where I cannot influence outcome (Another hearty agreement from me).

Wait – there’s more. Instead of creating products – which can be easily replicated – create something else – INFORMATION, he says. This book is so filled with garbage that Tim Ferriss actually spends several pages in his book writing a line by line SCRIPT that you can use with your boss when you persuade them to let you work from home. Save your time and your money. Well ok, if you’re only working 4 hours a week, maybe you don’t really care too much about it either! Honestly, this dude has shown us how to make bucks while working only 4 hours a day – write some book with a catchy title, market it, put on an air of success and Bob’s your uncle, he’s rich.

This section of the book is an interesting read, but little more. dog food prices.

Great Buy For The Money – Public Education Reform Book Critique

All then would understand the fallacies of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB), the worst piece of legislation ever created in the history of American education, as well as the problems that arise from high stakes testing. It’s all in the book; all they have to do is read.

Read her book and then join us at and help us bring the demise of NCLB and Race to the Top to an even faster conclusion. This book is a must read for every teacher, administrator and anyone else interested in education. Teachers are no longer respected as professionals to do the work they know is right for our kids. She has done her homework on the effects of NCLB and presents extensive data to prove it. What almost every reader will acknowledge, though, by the end of the book is that their perspective has been broadened, and their understanding of the issues has been deepened. It is not too often that a book forms a bridge between a school board member and the head of the teacher’s union, but this one is capable of doing so (and did).

I liked it, probably, though, because I agreed with so many of her ideas. Diane Ravich is my hero! This is ironic considering that philanthropists are able to write these checks because of tax legislation that was intended to support social welfare. Private donations are essentially public dollars.

I learned a great deal from this book. In an era when so much is at stake economically, the importance of education should never be undermined.

It won’t be fixed overnight. But if we stick with a back to basics approach, saturated with the solid American democratic values that Dr Ravitch advocates, we won’t be so prone to fall for the silver bullets that never seem to find their mark. There is nothing easier to learn how to do than to vastly improve K-12 education and nothing harder to actually achieve. This book is replete with examples of the latter and contains some good advice for the latter.

Piece by piece and bit by bit, Ravitch takes apart the standardized-testing logic that has developed as part of NCLB. She reveals that states have lowered the bar without telling the public so that students’ scores appear to make great leaps from year to year when, in fact, they are actually stagnant or in decline. My thoughts were confirmed by a members of my book group who were new to the topic or engaged in schooling in an area that isn’t in the thick of the arguments (pre-school and after school programs). These solutions are either founded on faulty data, skewed by corporate influence, or impractical (if not impossible) to take to scale. Every policy-maker in the field should read it, from DC to state capitols and local school boards. The corrosive effect of the “creative destruction” that is the marketplace on our national culture — whether in the popular media or the classroom — is also something we should all worry about. Best For The Cash – All About Family Book Review

Sarah Palin’s views on America and the worth of every individual and the sanctity of life resonate: We are a great country and with strong leadership that believes in this nation’s potential our best days still lie ahead. We will dig ourselves out this economic mess and get our confidence and momentum back. I am sorry that some people’s parents didn’t teach them. The book is a continuation from the last book, where Sarah went around the country talking to people like us, where it became clear she understands us. Contrary to negative reviewers who have tried to stack the deck against Sarah Palin with phony reviews, my honest opinion is that Sarah is getting better with each book she writes. The book is honest and sincere, and very enjoyable. What Palin adds is some description of the destruction to people and country caused when we forget the truth of those old verities. People who want to believe in quick fixes, who hate the idea of competition and believe that we can all just get along if only we hold hands and sing Kumbaya, are not going to like this book. If anything, she’s not critical enough of America. She certainly is not critical enough of the very segment of the population that so envies her joy and sense of inner peace and wishes to see her fail. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but she pushes hers as more than just an opinion, she treats them as facts. Lots of assertions, no facts, and unsurprisingly disappoints. In one chapter she rants about self-centeredness in people yet she is always talking about pro-American. When’s the last time you heard commentary in other countries about pro-Canadians, pro-French, or pro-Japanese?

She goes off on Hollywood and builds a straw man to attack about how the liberal elite wouldn’t dare make a movie like Mr Smith now because Hollywood is all about supporting the liberal agenda. Apparently it is too complex of a topic for her to comprehend, but the reason another Mr Smith probably won’t be made is that Americans don’t go for that kind of entertainment any more.

Finally, it is Sarah Palin’s character – the woman behind the political titles, TV spots, and public speeches – that one comes to know through America by Heart. When she speaks of Harriet Tubman, she is humble: “Her wonderful little prayer is a good reminder to those of us with less courage and less strength that we can accomplish more if we just do the same.” Sara Palin understands this. It is quite clear that this book has the Left upset as they are making an all-out effort to destroy Sarah Palin’s effort to expose what is wrong with right and wrong with America today.

I hope you read this book in its entirety and think about it. I loved the book. I really liked “America by Heart” and gladly give it 5 stars. I liked “Going Rogue” too, but that one was more of a personal introduction to Sarah Palin and her family while this one gets more into her political, religious and cultural beliefs.

She believes the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are defining documents. The Constitution is the wall that separates freedom from tyranny.

Our “rights,” as American citizens, come from our written Constitution and its expressed ideals, not from “God.” She bad mouths even Ronald Reagan, George Bush I & II, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and of course President Obama.

I expect fully to get negative ratings with this review because to criticize Palin to a far right-winger is like criticizing Jesus himself. mens yoga clothing.

Good Item – Career Finder Book Critique

It’s a real grabber. It’s too bad that there’s not more substance to go with it.

Nothing new here either. The reason this is a best seller is that America is a slave to work nation that doesn’t recognize the value of time off and living life and thus everyone’s dream is to work only 4 hours a week. In a hypothetical example, Ferriss describes a man who works remotely (on his computer) while in Munich during Oktoberfest. The thing is, Ferriss suggests being substantially more productive outside the office to show your boss that working remotely makes good business sense. Until robots can run the world, the ethical implication is that it is OK for some people to work, just not Mr Ferriss or his readers. Finally, throughout the book Mr Ferris keeps referring to the New Rich. Much of what I got out of the book was a reminder to myself about how important it is to spend time wisely. The 80/20 rule is gone over.

Finally, I know there is a lot of criticism about his ideas on outsourcing tasks, but we live in an outsourced world. The shirt you’re wearing was made in Indonesia, your fruits and vegetables were picked by migrant workers from Mexico, and your computer that you’re reading this from right now was manufactured in China.

There’s no moral center to the book. Mr Ferriss comes across as a con man in several ways. Tim’s suggestions strike me as basically unethical, and not the way I want to interact with the world. Unlike him, I don’t see the rest of the people in the world as pawns in my game to do as little as possible.

He says when you work stay focused and get your tasks done (“if this is the only thing you accomplish today, will you be satisfied with your day”). And he hammers home about 80/20. You don’t have to recoup losses the same way you lose them – An interesting discussion of mortgages. Is this achievement any less empty then earning a pile of money that you don’t know what to do with” There is also a nice chapter about how to outsource work to virtual assistants in India and other places.

They are often in debt, middle-class generally, but living paycheck to paycheck or not far above it. They live from scarcity rather than abundance and so any little bit they have over they have to save rather than use to help someone else. After some time she returns all excited and wants to show me something. When we get there it’s a very cute (her words not mine) ensemble of bright colors and some design work. He rails against the “deferred life plan”–working a decade (or three) doing something you don’t like to save money for retirement, where you’ll (supposedly) do what you’ve always wanted. Ferriss gives some good time-management advice as well. Ferriss recommends that in order to get rich, we pick a topic – any topic – spend a little bit of time researching it so we know a little more than our audience, conduct a free seminar on it, tape the seminar, and distribute it. He’s done it himself with speed reading and a few other topics.

Good Bang For My Buck – Career Paths Book Review

I’m not going to lie, I felt motivated to give this book a try after reading the first part of the book without even knowing what this book is all about. But as I began to get out of the fluff, and actually found myself reading the core subject of the book, I was utterly disappointed.

The list goes on as does the new information in the book. This one is a must read for anyone who wants to break the slave-save-retire cycle and live on purpose now. I wouldn’t be surprised if his next book is about how to write a “work lifestyle philosophy” book and make a ton of money on it. There are some interesting ideas in this book – about outsourcing to a “virtual assistant” and living life for now rather than retirement. I’d wager that the vast majority of newcomers to this business invest large amounts of time, lose money, and quit. In the end it’s just like any other business – if you want to succeed doing this kind of stuff, the “secret” is hard work and perseverance. Go for one that has stood the test of time…Your Money or Your Life. Great stuff and no…I have no affiliation with those authors.

It’s not a get-rich quick scheme. It’s not about being dishonest or unethical. He hired an assistant to look for a toy online that was in much demand the assistant got paid $20.00 USD per hour to do this and the toy cost about $20.00 USD and he didn’t get the one he wanted. If the assistant spent three hours looking for this toy the total cost $80.00 USD.

That said, the other ideas Ferriss proposes – and, more importantly, the impact on your life he argues those ideas will have – are certainly thought-provoking and more than a little inspirational. The only well written chapter was done by another author. The ideas are either rehashed theories of famous economists or, frankly, ideas that will get most people fired from their jobs.

This book is no scam and it’s not trying to sell any snake oil. Perhaps the author does downplay the time and risk and money it takes to start and run a successful internet based business, perhaps people just hear what they want to hear and it doesn’t matter anyway. The core of the book remains nearly the same as the first book – the additional 100 pages primarily consist of examples from others and testimonials taken from the blog. While these are certainly great additions – they don’t change or update the core content.
