She rightly notes that NCLB has created a combination of unreachable goals and perverse incentives that have frequently derailed the ultimate goal of improving student learning. The US DOE’s Race to the Top initiative requirement that a state greatly increase the number of charter schools should be rethought. As the author points out, the reforms of the last 20 years have focused on testing, choice and structures instead of focusing on the heart of education – what is taught and how it is taught.
But the reality that those 300 AP scholars are not merely proficient but far, far above state standards (ten times as much twenty times as much). On the AYP’s AP students are counted as just competent students.
But history is not just the distant past, but the news of yesterday as well. By putting events, still fresh in our memories, into relevant context, Dr Ravitch demonstrated their importance in the larger historical context and made her reputation. All professors I have talked to, from very conservative to very liberal, agree this problem has grown a lot in recent years. I fear that if we continue down the current road, my students will not have access to a diverse, inspiring, rigorous education – they will be put in a compliance testing camp and will just drop out, rather than graduate. This would be a tragedy.
Diane has always been a supporter of standards; and as a public school teacher so am I. Ravitch is also not afraid to state the obvious: the temptation for schools, teachers and administrators to game the system or cheat is sometimes overwhelming. While there I was exposed to works by Ayn Rand, Tom Sowell, and a host of other free-market thinkers, and I found myself largely convinced by their arguments. As graduation approached I wrote my thesis on free-market reforms in public education, taking the radical stance that public education was a failed experiment that should be abandoned.
Tax cutting is also involved here; steady pressure to reduce taxes, and to cut education spending as the first line of doing so, is obvious, but less obvious is the degree to which it lies behind the reforms. Most of them are about saving money, not about helping kids.
There are schools, even whole countries that beat the odds in educating children. Their students perform far better than those with similar demographics. And while I hope you will read it if you are involved in or have any interest in education, I really wish people like Barack Obama, Arne Duncan, Bill Gates, and 50 governors of a state near you would read it, too. The juggernaut we are presently on has to be slowed down before it can be stopped, after all. My thoughts were confirmed by a members of my book group who were new to the topic or engaged in schooling in an area that isn’t in the thick of the arguments (pre-school and after school programs). These solutions are either founded on faulty data, skewed by corporate influence, or impractical (if not impossible) to take to scale. Instead we teach to the tests, reprimand teachers by means of bureaucratic, inconsistent standards, and use the public schools as a dumping ground for those who are left behind, skewing the statistics of charter schools. Instead of a boxing match of ideas that motivates students to think clearly and critically, Diane Ravitch paints a picture akin to professional wrestling where it is the children who take the fall. They also happened to be concepts very popular with me: teacher pay linked to performance, charter schools, consequences for schools, teachers, principals if they don’t meet performance goals, data driven education based on test scores. The second education we need is the other education, the “true education” that which teaches us how to live our lives more fully by teaching us to think AND to appreciate the “Good Life”. Ravitch provides an alarming look at how these rich and powerful foundations sometimes use their clout to promote their own agendas and philosophies of education. Why is this allowed to happen?
I transferred to the high school about that time. All we did was dance to the state department of education’s interpretation of NCLB – many false starts, much wasted time.
First, doctors would find ways of lowering temperatures (alcohol rubs, etc.) without improving underlying conditions. But even if temperature figures were not to get gamed in this way, any improvement in fever scores could not reasonably be interpreted as improvement in the overall health of the patients.
As a student, she felt that her teacher was wonderful and in retrospect she suspects that Mrs Ratliff would not have been as great if she was under all of the regulations and assessments that teachers under NCLB must endure. Teacher accountability is extremely important, but measuring that accountability should not sacrifice the quality of actual learning that occurs in the classroom. This book has the right criticisms and the right solutions, and just might pull us out. The worst effect of the tests and the No Child Left Behind nightmare is that students now often cheat and see nothing wrong with it.
Ravitch also describes the charter school movement, which began with great promise and intent. Shanker envisioned schools run by teachers using only innovative ideas and sharing ideas that worked with other schools.
As Ravitch says on page 223, “The nature of our education system–whether mediocre or excellent – will influence society far into the future.” Considering the initiatives currently being pushed by President Obama and Secretary of Education Duncan, Ravitch’s words couldn’t be truer. This work altered my life. I quit my public school job and took a teaching job in a parochial high school.
Diane Ravitch is the preeminent education historian in the United States, and believe it or not, she is no academic, for she has lived through these issues at the highest levels of the United States Department of Education and other places that are very much at the heart of K-12 education in America. Diane presents the education debates and issues of our times in an easy to digest, well- documented, first-hand account. All then would understand the fallacies of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB), the worst piece of legislation ever created in the history of American education, as well as the problems that arise from high stakes testing. It’s all in the book; all they have to do is read. In fact many Charter Schools can be models and are quite scalable. Many schools do just that with similar results. I do not recall her bringing up the fact that this country pays more than most for public schools. Her citations from studies on Charter Schools are sometimes a bit selective. Ravitch laments that the charters are not serving as experimental labs to help public schools by trying new ideas. Instead, they are competing with and even cannibalizing the public schools as if it is a cut throat business model of competition. In reviewing Ravitch’s latest book I am handicapped by my deep and richly earned veneration of her intellect and her character. If I seem to be “hero-worshipping” her, then my credibility as a critic may suffer.

An Excellent Quality Item – Family Beliefs Book Review

I have a better opinion than most, and I am 11. Looking forward to episode of her show tonight!
In using this phrase here move to a different location. Enemy-centric is not a term meaning friendly towards the enemy as Palin indicates in her writing.
Either way this book is purely money in her pocket and not at all worth the time I wasted/lost reading it, and complete waste of trees. I confess I only read the first chapter in the “Read it now” function on Amazon.
I’m 99% certain that this was ghost-written (I didn’t see the word “repudiate” anywhere) by someone who has never actually studied history or political science. Howling errors and insane ideological statements abound; I don’t even recommend reading this for a laugh. This book is an ocean. Quite frankly, the book is good and I would suggest that you read it and make up your own mind about it rather than to form an opinion based on the obvious bias you’ll find here by some reviewers.
This “book” should be retitled “America, Dumbing Down”. I can’t understand the attraction to this money-grubbing family.
As Ms Palin successfully continues to churn out her books and not letting the facts get in her way, she successfully convinces Americans that she is one of the great thinkers of our times; I would not be surprised if someday I will have to refer to Ms Palin as Madam President. Each book that Ms Palin and her kind sell to the public, enriches their personal wealth but bankrupts Americans to be free thinkers; soon Americans who don’t fall in line to the extremist philosophies of Palin, Limbaugh, Beck and the rest of their kind, will be too intimidated and scared to think outside the box. It’s misleading, misinformation, glossing over of issues, and trying to paint the tea party as simply interested in correcting all the wrongs of the Obama administration. The National debt only comes up in the context of Obama adding to it with no understanding or mention of the financial crisis that had hit this country during the Bush administration. Extolling the virtues of flags, freedom, and faith, Sarah Palin (I will use her name as a substitute for the real author) has managed to write one of the most insipid and fatuous books I have ever read. Palin’s simple-minded and entirely erroneous cognitive framework goes something like this. But wait, if it is bad policy and wasting American lives, isn’t that the actual time to speak out? Does it make sense to speak out after a dumb war when speaking out would be pointless and after the fact?
I think it will give you an insight of why so many of us would like to see more of her in the future. It would be fine with me to have this “Mama Grizzly” at the helm, someday! That standard premise of what Palin stands for is basically the standard rhetoric from the right you hear on talk radio and fox news which all comes from the same right wing think tanks. They all say the same stuff. Sarah Palin believes it is unpatriotic to dissent from a war. Or, she thinks you are really not a good American if you do so. First off let me say I am a conservative Republican and a big Sarah Palin. This book, however, was terrible! And although our circumstances may have been different, the sentiment certainly hits home. Take your best shot.

An important thing to remember in knowing how to teach a child to read is to never forget that they are still children. It is important for parents to just keep it simple and basic since there is no urgent need for children to learn complicated words since they have no use for it for the time being. And instead of bombarding the child with a lot of words to learn, stick to a small number of simple words which the child can easily use in school and home, and continuously repeat in order for them to absorb and memorize.
In order to reinforce the child’s energy to learn and not be easily distracted or be tired, a helpful way on how to teach a child to read is to provide certain rewards such as toys, stars, etc. Young children are easily distracted, bored and frustrated, and it is important that parents maintain reading activities as enjoyable and interesting as possible.

Not As Marketed – Family Book Critique

Palin believes that the United States can return as leader in global greatness by following the principles the original founding fathers set out in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Recent administrations have drifted far from these principles. She is fulfilling such a necessary role by promoting TRUE conservatism and fostering our ability to promote real change. By doing this, the RIGHT person for the job has the best chance of being elected. Although his plans were not adopted in totality, they did form the basic outline for American development.
How Ms Palin or her ghost writer could ignore all of this is a bad sign for the quality of the rest of the book which I will not waste my time reading. Governor Palin has done something which few politicians dare to do these days: discuss what makes America an exceptional nation.
It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, as least as it has been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted it the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Second, I stopped reading at page 140 as I’d had enough of the exaggerations and flat-out lies in this book. Contrary to negative reviewers who have tried to stack the deck against Sarah Palin with phony reviews, my honest opinion is that Sarah is getting better with each book she writes. The book is honest and sincere, and very enjoyable.
I needed a “pick-me-up”. I bought America by heart and my attitude adjustment started and with each page I got happier and happier. The book was well written and is what America is all about. I hear the liberal naysayers complaining so it is obvious the book is a success. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but she pushes hers as more than just an opinion, she treats them as facts. Lots of assertions, no facts, and unsurprisingly disappoints. Sarah Palin is the happy warrior that takes on the Left in her book “America by Heart”. This book leaves no doubt to where Sarah Palin stands on issues. In the most straightforward manner possible Sarah lays out the philosophy of commonsense constitutional conservatism. The plainspoken style reinforces the principled message.
Save your money and your time. Liberals will likely form an opinion without reading it, as will conservatives who don’t like Palin.
People of faith and hope are following her. Save your money unless you want a good laugh. The amazing Sarah Palin continues to shine in her latest book.

The constitution of the United States prohibits certain actions including prohibiting an “establishment of religion”. By the way, Palin states that a cross on public land doesn’t violate the constitution because it doesn’t establish a religion.
In both message and style it is nearly the polar opposite of the “Dreams” book that Bill Ayers wrote for Obama. In that more literary (and to be fair well written) book the messages of social justice and victim-hood were artfully woven into a Homeric tale that (intentionally) sacrificed clarity for literary style.
This book is really bad. I could spend hours writing a formal critique with more erudite adjectives, but I truly don’t know where to begin. This book reads like a sales pitch and a 300-page infomercial for the author. I can’t tell if she’s setting herself up for a run in 2012 or to continue her wildly lucrative speaking business. This book was written for the obvious purpose of monetary gain, not much different from any other book by politicians at this time in history. Superb, excellent, loved every page!
First, I got this book from the library.
The liberals can’t relate to anyone that doesn’t mimic their ridiculous message. According to the liberals every democratic president or candidate is so intelligent and the conservative candidates are all stupid and probably cheated in school if they do have a good educational background.
It features interesting stories, many quotes from others to make her points, well written. If you hate Sarah Palin, you will hate this book.
There is an anti-partisan rebellion building in the U.S. I doubt there will be little tolerance for hyper-partisan candidates in the next election, so why she has chosen this path is a mystery to me.
These young people feel entitled to jobs and salaries they haven’t earned. And now, her daughter has made many more thousands of dollars on Dancing with the Stars. I was impressed by Palin after finishing this. If you hate her, don’t bother educating yourself about her beliefs; just keep on with the mindless bashing. Here I go for a second time and although my feelings have not changed since I first read the book, I’ll have to change the review a bit. I was told that someone complained about the quotes I used. And that honestly was what I thought was the main weakness of the book.

Really, how had her breadth of study and knowledge not been known – was she hiding this in 2008 or has she spent the last 2 years studying – in between book tour, Tea Party and speaking appearances, filming a reality show and being a Fox News commentator? Now it seems apparent (to me) that she read and relied heavily on Spalding’s book, adding those folksy touches that her fan base loves.
