share your good/bad sewing stories please :) ?
i just wanted to hear some good or bad stories of your sewing experience. i want to learn to sew, but am not good with reading a book. i have no one that could teach me. there is an expertvillage site that has online videos that teach you how to sew. i want to get into it, but wanted to know how many times of sewing before id actually wear something that id make and also how long before i can sell my clothes. i know im dreaming and rushing it, but i am on disability which alows me to make money while not working. i would like to start this hobby and enjoy it in my free time (which is alot) and get the most practice. whats funny is that i already have a computerized 70 stitch brother sewing machine, table and all the tools i need, but no experience. WOW crazy eh, i hope that i will hear some of your great stories on sewing and maybe even get inspired. thanks for your time :)

my mom taught me the basics of sewing [i'm still nowhere close to how well & easily she can sew!], the rest i picked up hands-on, books & practice. sometimes, i’m still not too neat with it & am more impatient than with my other crafts. and i hate to rip off the seams/stitches when i go wrong.
however, there have been times when i’ve been ecstatic over something that has come out perfect – it is all worth the effort. i still remember dancing & jumping with joy when i sewed a particularly elegant piece of dress & tried it on. and there was no one around to share it with at that particular moment ;-) ))

and once, very early in my experience, a professional seamstress complemented me on the neatness of a blouse i’d stitched. that too gave me a lot of confidence.

i suggest, you start off with simple & small projects. this will give you practice as well as confidence. eg. table mats, place mats, pots holders, mittens, pillow-covers, cushion covers, kitchen dusters, napkins …. most of these require neat straight lines. and you can use all the 70 stitches in various combinations to adorn the fabric.
in fact, start immediately, without procrastination. with Xmas approaching, you can easily make sets & gift them to your loved ones.
    won’t They be amazed & happy ?!

    all the very best.
get off the computer & on to your sewing machine pronto :-) )

My mother was a sewer and starting at about the age of 5, I was allowed to mess with the machine and little by little, picked up the skills. Over the years, I’ve made my own clothes when I couldn’t find things to fit and I made all of my daughter’s clothes when she was growing up. Saved a TON of money over the years and had a lot of fun along the way. Right now, I’m trying to gather together all the equipment to make slipcovers for one of our more beat-up chairs and make window quilts to keep the cold out. I’ve ripped out more than my share of seams and zippers and lost my temper more than once.
If you’re patient and careful, as soon as you snip the last thread and turn it right side out, you can wear it. Like anything else, it’s practice, practice, practice. If you can sew a straight seam, you can make anything. You’re only limited by your imagination. Go for it. (And don’t be too surprised if sewing leads to all sorts of other horrible habits, like knitting, crocheting, embroidering, etc.)

I have been a sewer for years. I took it up in high school.

My room mate decided to make a pair of pants out of velveteen fabric. I told her that she should lay the pattern out and I would check it out before she cut it.

I had to go to work, when I came home she was so excited because she had finished the pants.

She went into the other room and came out so excited. It was the funniest thing I ever saw. Because she reversed the direction of the pattern, one side had the nap running the one way, the other going in the opposite direction.

They looked like clown pants! From then on, she made sure she was always laying the pattern out correctly.
