The producers of various television series have realized that the viewers want something unique and new and therefore they try to attract as many number of viewers as possible, by are making series on new themes. This is also due to the fact that as a result of the increased competition only that product or program will remain on air which is liked by the viewers and provides returns to the producers. As a result in a few television shows, the theme of space travel and life beyond the earth has been explored.

Defying Gravity is about eight astronauts who are on board the international spacecraft Antares on a six year mission through the solar system and is a science fiction based drama show regarding their adventures on this journey. Defying Gravity has been inspired by the BBC documentary fiction series Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets that was broadcasted in 2004 and has been set in the year 2052 with astronauts being four male and four female from six different countries. The series has been multi nationally produced.

Defying gravity has been directed by directors like Fred Gerber, Sturla Gunnarsson, Peter Howitt and David Straiton while James D.Pariott, Sheri Elwood, Meredith Lavender and Marcie Ulin share the writing credits. The various countries that have produced the series are United States, Canada, Germany and United Kingdom in which production companies BBC, Fox, Omni film, CTV, SPACE and ProSeiben are involved. The special effects supervisor for this sci-fi series was Andrew Chamberlayne. Defying Gravity has had a single season only thus far which had 13 episodes in total.

Evram Mintz, Jen Crane, Steve Wassenfelder, Ted Shaw, Maddux Donner, Nadia Schilling, Paula Morales and Zoe Barnes play the role of the astronauts on board Antares while Arnel Poe, Trevor Williams, Ajay Sharma, Claire Derux, Eve Weller Shaw, Mike Goss and Rollie Crane have played the earth characters and Jeff Walker and Sharon Lewis have played the role of people on Mars in the science fiction series. These actors have played the roles of the various characters on the show quite well.

From August 2, 2009 to October 23, 2009 the show had a run after which it was cancelled. With sub titles in English, Spanish and French, the DVD for all the 13 episodes has been released in North America. Defying Gravity got one nomination so far for VES award in the category of outstanding visual effects in a broadcast series in 2010.

In Defying Gravity, the crew members are being monitored on earth as they go on their thirteen billion kilometers journey. The crew members realize that their mission was not going to be what it was supposed to be. The crew had set off to get some knowledge about the solar system by conducting research during a 6 year mission on 6 planets. The astronauts also wear Hormone Activated Libido Oppressors so that the libido of the crew members get suppressed during the mission but romance develops between the various crew members since the oppressor failed.

The episodes can be downloaded from the various websites that are available for free or can be directly watched online as well. The show can be watched on DVD as well since it is no longer broadcasted. Though the show was not very successful it had something in it for the fiction lovers.
