Techniques Used In Offset Printing

Most companies require a printing service on a regular basis, whether it is for marketing purposes or for internal communication. Hence, it is important to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, particularly offset printing, which is one of the most widely used printing technologies.

The users and the printers like offset printing because of its cost effectiveness for printing of large number of prints. The clients giving big printing orders are recommended by the printers to opt for offset printing due to this reason.

The ink used during offset printing has oil as the medium and does not dissolve in water. In offset printing, rubber blankets act as intermediate for copying the image on the paper, which is originally on the plate.

The process begins by developing the designs. When offset printing started, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later transferred to aluminum plates. This is no longer required as the technology exists for making the plates in one go through an image setting system. After this, the plate is stuck to a cylinder with the right side facing upwards. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. The ink is poured over the image and to stop it from overflowing, a thin layer of water is put over the remaining part of the plate.

After being painted with the ink, the image is kept on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, resulting in the image to be reversed. The image is reversed to its correct side by transferring the image to sheets that have been cut according to the need and are put on a different cylinder.

Printed sheets are stapled, pasted, or arranged in any other manner as needed and the printing company sends them after giving some finishing touches.

The most usual type of offset printing uses light-sensitive chemicals and photographic techniques in transmitting pictures and typing from original materials to printing plates. In present use, master copy may be an actual photographic print and typeset text. However, it is more common, with the prevalence of computers and digital images, that the original material exists only as data in a digital publishing system.
