Considering the number of female action directors in the United States, it was not really a surprise that Kathryn Bigelow was referred to as the best female in this business. After her first two movies in the 90′s, “Point break” and “Strange days”, this title had become her second name. Directing the Hurt Locker has done nothing but renewed the glory of the title bestowed on her. She has put in her years of experience into making this film what it is today.

The movie is based on Iranian war. No it is not about politics or any bad politician; it is actually based on the American living in Iran. It could have easily been shot at any other location as well. The film tries to show the daily feelings that an American living there goes through, It is not longer about why are they there or how are they going to leave. It’s a new side to their story. The story also tries very hard to high light the fact that the cost of living is ever increasing and hence living in such a country may be a very difficult task for anyone.

The one aspect that is appreciated about this movie is that it is to the point. It does not run round and round the bush. It introduces all the characters in the first scene itself. They are supposed to be part of a team that is called on for disposing bombs. They are part of a company that is names Brave. These characters are thorough professionals in what they do and have been trained on various explosive devices. The team is trying to dispose a bomb in the first scene of the movie. The team has quite a few members including Sgt. Thomspson (Guy Pearce) as the head, Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) as the vigilant one and Elderidge (Brian Geraghty) as the new member on the team. This scene somehow depicts the entire movie’s story line.

Later in the movie Sgt. James takes the place of Sgt. Thompson and suddenly Sgt. Thompson looks nothing but a scared and nervous person. On the flip side Sgt. James throws caution to the wind and implements his own standards of safety that he had learnt through his experience. Sanborn and Elderidge succumb to his attitude.

The movie keep moving forward based on a number of situations that take pace. Al these scenes are more or less based on the first scene that was shown. The main objective of the movie as the movie precedes you will see is to know what is going on inside Sgt. James’s head.

The encounters in the movie are built in a very episodic manner. The best part about this is that the suspense is still maintained. Bigelow’s idea to use hand held camera’s to produce gritty scenes worked extremely well. The end is a bit unsatisfactory. The way the story was built up becomes it weakness and then the end that was chosen just seems dull and lifeless. Ending the movie with two speeches was not such a good idea after all.
