Could Thomas Jefferson be AntiChrist? It Depends On How You Define The Term.
A favorite evangelical parlor game is “Where’s AntiChrist?” It’s like “Where’s Waldo?”, except that it grows in popularity whenever some new, power-figure emerges on the world scene: Mussolini, Hitler, Kissinger, Reagan, Obama, etc., etc.
It’s true, all of the evangelical attempts to call the timing of the second coming and the AntiChrist have proven to be false — but they never stop trying. Sadly, they can’t even tell the difference between an AntiChrist and the Beast. The Beast was obviously alive at the time John wrote Revelation, since he challenged his first century readers to “calculate the number of the beast” (Rev. 13:18). Most likely it was Nero, as Ken Gentry all but proves in his “Beast of Revelation.”
But that’s a story for another time. For now we’re considering Herb Titus’ defense of the Declaration of Independence as a Christian document in his book called, “The Declaration of Independence: The Christian Legacy” (Titus Publications, 1995).
Is it really possible for somebody with a humanistic world view like Jefferson to compose a founding document that would pass muster with the court of Heaven? I will simply present some observations and leave that determination for “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind.”
Jefferson The AntiChrist
Thomas Jefferson was a Unitarian who denied that Jesus Christ was God. In a letter dated June 26, 1822 Thomas Jefferson wrote to Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse, “…I trust that there is not a young man now living in the United States who will not die an Unitarian.”
As noted above, most Christians believe that the AntiChrist will arise in the last days as a supreme dictator. However, the Bible itself tells us that the antichrist is not just one person, but many.
“Children, even now many antichrists have arisen…They went out from us, but they were not really of us… (I John 2: 18, 19). And just a few sentences later, John defines the AntiChrist as “This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.”
Thus, we learn that Thomas Jefferson was — by Biblical definition – “antiChrist.” That is, he denied that Jesus is the Christ. That makes him a heretic because a heretic by definition is “the holder of an unorthodox position” (Oxford American Dictionary).
Thomas Jefferson was not the AntiChrist that most Christians are looking for but he was an antichrist. He has forsaken orthodoxy and is thus a heretic who has “gone out from us.”
Can AntiChrist Write A Christian Document?
The obvious question is, why then do Christians fawn over the Declaration of a heretic as if it were the definitive word on civil government. Is it wise to lift up the Declaration of Independence in this fashion without evaluating it critically in light of the Bible?
How is it possible for the words of an antichrist, who refuses to acknowledge the authority of Christ over all government to compose a governing document that is pleasing to God. I suppose anything is possible. God did make a donkey talk one time.
Or is it more likely that Thomas Jefferson is presenting a humanistic rather than a Biblical perspective on civil government. Humanists are all about defending the rights of man, rather than upholding the glory of God and the authority of His law in our legal system.
