Will Amazon Continue To Lead The E-Book Reader Market?

Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader is very definitely the market leader of all e-book readers right now. It enjoys a 60% share of the American e-book reader market – the Sony PRS reader is in second place with around 35%. Both the Kindle 2.0 and the larger Kindle DX are now being sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. The fact that virtually every new e-book reader which shows the slightest promise is instantly given the title of “Kindle Killer” is a testament to the fact that the Kindle is not just the market leader, but also sets the standard against which any new reader is going to be measured.
Given the current dominance of the Kindle, it’s easy to overlook the fact that it is a very recent addition to the e-book reader scene. The eBookman, by Franklin, was launched in 1999 – over a decade ago. Sony’s PRS reader launched in 2006. The original Kindle wasn’t released until November 2007. February 2009 saw the upgraded Kindle 2.0 released and the larger DX followed in June on the same year.
However, Amazon’s competitors have been far from idle. Sony has released their Daily Edition reader. Barnes and Noble launched their Nook and even the new Apple iPad is widely felt to be a threat to the Kindle. Other e-book readers are available and, needless to say, they all have some features which are currently lacking from the Kindle – colour screen, touch screen functionality etc.
So what will Amazon do by way of a response? Up to now, a few firmware updates aside, Amazon’s chief response to the increased competition level has been to cut $ 100 from the Kindle 2.0 launch price of $ 359. However, there are rumors that the next version of the Kindle will be released in the first half of 2010. Which prompts the question – what will Amazon do to further enhance the new Kindle?
One of the key factors in the success of the Kindle to date is the fact that it provides a great user experience. It’s very easy to use with one hand, the controls are excellent and the e-ink display is easy to read in a wide range of different lighting conditions. In a way, it would be something of a shame if Amazon were to follow the course of Sony’s Daily Edition reader by introducing touch screen functionality. If your main intent is simply to read books then this may not be regarded as a huge advance. If anything, one handed operation will become more difficult and, because touch screens have a more reflective surface, it may be harder to read in certain lighting conditions.
The introduction of color would certainly be a step forward but, were it to be achieved in a similar manner to Barnes and Noble’s Nook – which features color navigation only with the main reader screen still in monochrome – it would be pretty pointless. Reading black text on a white background is probably normal for around 90% of books – so although color would be nice, it’s not going to be a high priority for many readers.
What Amazon may very well opt to do, and what they have done extremely well up to now, is to provide a better user experience. Rather than focus on hardware gimmicks, Amazon could opt to provide new enhancements which will be genuinely useful for the Kindle’s end users. Quicker page turns, less screen flicker and a longer battery life between charges could be options which end users may appreciate. Increased choice of Kindle books, more rapid downloads and the possibility of sharing e-books might also be more welcome for users than hardware updates.
Amazon’s ability to satisfy the requirements of its customers has helped it achieve the current leadership position. It’s no surprise that Amazon understands what people who read books want and are willing to pay for. The Kindle is now their top selling product and, up to now, they have not only led the market but shaped it and helped it to develop. The next generation Kindle will clearly signal the way in which the e-book reader market is going to develop in future. On the balance of probabilities, it seems likely that Amazon will be a major force in the e-book reader market for the foreseeable future.

Classic Literature Review Of – To Kill A Mockingbird

The majority of American students at some time or another will be made to read the classic American tale “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Whether the students enjoy it and learn from it is another story! I remember first reading the book and seeing the movie in the 9th grade, and I recently saw the movie for the second time as an adult so I thought I’d give a quick review. Much to my surprise, I understood the movie just about the same as I had when I had first seen it.
The movie is set during the depression in a small Southern town called Maycomb, Alabama. During this time the South was deeply divided. There was very deep social and racial prejudice. The story follows three years in the life of one family, consisting of 8 year old Scout Finch, her brother Jem and their father Atticus, a lawyer. The main focus of the story is the accusation, arrest and trial of a black man after he is condemned by a white woman. Author Harper Lee tells much of the story through a child’s point of view and cleverly intertwines and explores the toughest issues of the time, class, race and justice.
The story takes its time and progressively builds its substance. The story begins in the summer, just before Scout is off to her first year of school. Her and her brother Jem play and fantasize about going to sneak a peak at the infamous town boogey man, Boo Radley. One day Jem decides enough is enough and tells Scout he’s going to go take a look for himself. As this is happening, the town has already put the accused rapist Tom Robinson in jail and is ready to put him on trial. Atticus Finch is appointed as his lawyer. The kids are oblivious to the situation until they find themselves wrapped up in a series of events beyond their comprehension.
As the trial starts and the circumstances unfold, the towns deep, dark underbelly begins to show. Atticus Finch, a rare honest man and lawyer, stands up for the truth and what is right. Despite the difficult odds and hostile townspeople, Atticus stands strong to defend an innocent man. His heroism is evident and teaches a hard lesson.
The understanding acquired by Scout is also heart-warming when she says, “most people are essentially kind when you really see them.” Through many twists and turns, the story can make you laugh, cry, and learn a lesson all at the same time. A true classic, the To Kill A Mockingbird book still remains socially relevant as much today as it was in 1960 when the book first came out.

The Dragon Ball Z TV show was one of the most prominent animation TV series of the late 1980′s and the entire 1990′s. The story revolves around the protagonist called Goku who is sent to earth to destroy it completely. The series starts with Goku’s brother Raditz coming in search for Goku, as he has not accomplished his task so far. But what Raditz doesn’t know is that Goku has forgotten everything as he was dropped from a cliff when he was a baby. Due to the fall he loses his memory.
Goku is completely unaware of his brother’s visit who has predicted that his race will destroy Earth and then sell the planet to the highest bidder and vows to return to finish his job in one year. Meanwhile Goku is lost to the world and the only way to reach him is via Snake Way and this road is full of perils. The question remains whether Goku will return in time to help planet Earth or destroy it with this brother Raditz.
The Z in the Dragon Ball Z stands for the Z warriors who help and fight along with Goku to defend and save planet earth. The fights and stunts sequences are extremely well directed and coordinated that it looks too good to watch even today as they fight against the invaders.
This series is the continuation of the Dragon Ball series which was aired earlier with just 200 episodes totally. Although the dragon ball series is animated one many video games and movies were based on it.
The problem though is that the Dragon Ball Z series is not easily available and airs sometimes on Cartoon Network in the US. In fact, many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures of mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale of television.
Reading is mostly a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the detective thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are holding.
Being able to read effectively helps you to develop an extensive vocabulary through reading different styles of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not know exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a general idea of what the sentence means.
Reading makes you more alert and more interested in new words. Some readers develop ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that every time they come across a new word, they try to figure out what it possibly means from the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to a dictionary.
Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to different subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other types of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – a free by-product!
Basically, reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Only grasping the writers point of view is not really good enough, you must have a response to what you have read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you have read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.
Now let me introduce you to the idea known as speed reading. All of the above applies three, four, eight, nine, even ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that … being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or college …
Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:
1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas. Look for the subject and predicate. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific book that you are reading.
