The German director Ingo Rasper debuts with a comedy – Fashion Victims. The flick has already won many accolades including the prestigious Berlin and Beyond Festival’s first – feature prize. It has also won an audience prize at the Max Ophuls Festival. The plot revolves around a middle-aged status obsessed family and their upheavals with gay romance as a sub plot thrown in.
Edgar Selge plays the role of Wolfgang Zenker who lives in a provincial German community. He has been booked several times for over speeding. He also has a stay-at-home wife in Erika (Franziska Walser). Wolfgang earns his livelihood by selling drab clothes for middle aged women. Roman Knizka plays the role of Steven, the young salesman, who rivals Wolfgang with his collection of new fashion conscious clothes which becomes an instant hit with the people. This, no doubt, creates a problem for Wolfgang.
His son Karsten (Florian Batholomai) is all set to join a Spanish language summer school. His father Wolfgang is driving him to the airport when he is again pulled up for crossing the speed limit. Due to his repeated offences, he receives an immediate ban on driving. On his father’s insistence, Karsten is forced to stay at home and the sub plot takes shape from here.
Since he was now banned from driving, he asks his son to do the driving as he runs from shop to shop in despair. His fears are found to be true – almost all the shops have accepted the latest clothing from Steven and there is hardly any place for him to sell his stuff. The film moves into a sub plot when Karsten was sent to the run an errand to the nearby dry cleaners and he had a chance meeting with Steven. A romantic liaison developed between the two. Karsten had no idea that Steven was his dad’s nemesis. When he came to know about it he was in a dilemma. He cannot reveal his alternate sexuality neither can he make public his relationship with Steven. His mother Erika, meanwhile, is thinking of divorce while Wolfgang himself shows signs of despair.
The film does not have a tragic ending as expected. There is a hint of reconciliation at the end. Everybody essay his role to perfection. This is the hallmark of a good film and Fashion Victim movie is one such example. Edgar gives a stellar performance as a desperate salesman who is experiencing change of fortunes in a fashion conscious society. Walser as his wife is very convincing. Florian does justice to his role.
Fashion Victims movie has all the potential to set the cash registers ringing. But it remains to be seen whether there are any takers for this dark comedy. The cameraman needs to be applauded for his brilliant portrayals of the German provinces. The locale in which the film was shot is perfect.

The Silence of Lorna movie, is from the Dardenne brothers from Belgium. In this movie they make an attempt to a grim social subject and turn it in to a social reality by examining closely the human behaviour in various situations. The film’s end is more than unusual and proves to be quite reflective. This film sets out to investigate the behaviour of a lost soul. The film received mixed reactions when it was screened at Cannes but what mattered was that people were talking about it regardless of the reactions.
Lorna, (Arta Dobroshi) is an immigrant from Albania. She comes to a Belgium town, Liege to fulfil her dream of living independently and running a sandwich shop. She wants to do this with her boyfriend but has a distorted sense of morality. She enters a marriage of convenience to Claudy, a Belgium junky (Jeremie Renier) by paying him to acquire herself a Belgium passport. Claudy is struggling to quit drugs and is greedy for money. He knows that when Lorna is ready to divorse him, he will be paid again.
Claudy’s daily needs keep increasing constantly and so to his demands on Lorna. She is desperate, and lonely. Her dreams are the only thing that she has to look forward to and thus she desperately to hang on to her dreams. It is during this time that she meets Fabio (Fabrizio Rongione), a Russian gangster who brainwashes Lorna to use Claudy till she gets her Belgium passport and then to do away with Claudy by making it look like a drug overdose case. After that he proposes that she get married to him so that he too could get a Belgium passport. Lorna agrees to play along because she wants to purchase a snack bar to run with her boyfriend Sokol (Alban Ukaj).
Lorna agrees to play along but has other plans. She believes that she will be able to divorce Claudy if she speeds up the proceedings of the divorce, marry the Russian gangster, earn her money and then buy her snack bar without getting Claudy killed. Claudy on the other hand is aware of Lorna’s plan of getting her Belgium passport and then wanting to divorce him but knows nothing about her mob connections and agreement.
Lorna continues to play along from day to day with situations until a day when things make herv stop and think twice because of a certain series of events that unexpectedly take place. She stops to re-examine her path. The flame of humanity is lit in her. This drives her in to seeking comfort from a strange doctor and a nurse where she reveals to them how she inflicts wounds on herself to prove that her husband is physically abusing her so that the divorce is processed quickly.

The most useful organizers from the pre-modern era have been and continue to be bookbinders. The bookbinder originated in India, as did most things of import, and was later improved upon by Arabs and Romans and so on. Originally writings were made on leaves. As time progressed, paper type products became the norm. This led to advancements in bindings, as well. Places, such as bookbinder Columbia, came to specialize in the process.
Typically, when one thinks of a book binder, the first thing that comes to mind is school. The first introduction that many of us have to bookbinders happens in school. The three to four bind hard cover shells come in various sizes from half an inch to over three inches. These binders hold loose leaf papers ideal for school notes and homework. This is a great way to organize one’s schoolwork and study material.
Ring binders are also convenient for albums and scrapbook projects. Binders for these specific purpose are available in a wide variety at most stationery and gift stores. Some of these specialty products also come in various sizes, designs, and formats. For example, there are some mini binders that can be used for address books and that little secret black book. Others are designed more for keeping a journal or diary. There are also styles to fit most fashion trends.
The advancement in binding technology has improved over the years. Bindings have gone from the wood and bamboo types to leather, calfskin, cloth and paper. Other types of binds are either stitched or sewn. Comic books, on the other hand, are saddle stitched. Here the pages are stapled through the centerfold. For smaller books and periodicals, this can be a quick, inexpensive, and easy solution. Magazines can also be saddle stitched, but many of the high end periodicals tend to be perfect bound with some type of thermal adhesive. The spine orientation and titling have different conventions, depending on the text size and purpose.
In today’s digital age, the rise in electronic readers and devices has reduced the need for book bindings. This has also lowered publishing costs. Sometimes older books require some reclamation or maintenance. Here the need for master book binders is realized. No matter how much we progress, the joy of holding a work of literature in one’s hand remains a singular experience. This tactile input is lacking in the digital age.

Captain Kirk The Heart Of A Biker

I remember reading one of the Star Trek novels years ago. Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise were sent to see if they could end a war that had been going on for hundred years between two planets. Star fleet told Kirk and Crew, if these two planets did not stop fighting, within ten years both planets would destroy themselves. This is kind of how I remember the story.
As the Enterprise crew studied the two planets it seemed they had nothing in common at all. The races looked nothing alike, their religions were far apart, and their economy and Government structure were completely different. The Crew searched and searched but it seemed they could find no common ground between the two planets in all their files.
When Kirk reached the planets, he held a meeting onboard the Enterprise. Delegates from both worlds attended the meeting. After only a few minutes, the Delegate’s from the two planets where arguing fiercely and Kirk had to call an end the meeting.
While the Enterprises Crew kept looking for something in common between these two Worlds, Kirk set up two private meetings with the leaders of the two planets. While having dinner with the first planets leader, Kirk found him to be very smart and personable. He enjoyed his company. He then set up a meeting for Lunch with the Leaders of the Second Planet. Again He found this race to be very intelligent and easy to get along with.
Kirk could not understand how these two different planets, which were both so smart and friendly, could not get along. There had to be a way to get them to just start talking to each other. Kirk set up another meeting for the next day between these two worlds to try once more to try to get them to talk with each other.
Kirk spent all night pacing and thinking. “There has to be something they have in common”, he thought. As the meeting was only a few hours away, Kirk sat down to rest. As Kirk was relaxing he thought, “I haven’t eaten in hours I’m starved”. He started thinking of the meals he had with the two alien races. He had enjoyed both meals. The main dishes had both reminded him of corn and having grown up in Iowa, corn was something Kirk knew. Corn? Wait Kirk thought, calling one of his Ensigns and telling him to get him the Menus from both meals. After reviewing the meals and the ingredients, he soon realized that the same corn like plant grew on both planets.
With only a short time left, Kirk ordered dishes made from both planets that included the plant. When the Leaders and delegates from both worlds arrived, they were told please no talking, they would all eat first. Both groups enjoyed the meal. When the leader of one of the planets asked Kirk about one of the dishes made from the corn like plant, Kirk told him he would have to ask the Leader of the second planet as it was one of their dishes. As one of the leaders of the Second planet explained how it was made, other members of the groups started talking about how they grew the plants and recipes that had been handed down in their families over the years.
This was the common ground Kirk had been looking for. Within a few hours, the planets had agreed to a cease fire and by the end of the week the planets had stopped fighting and declared peace. It took many years for some to get over their hatred of each other and things did not go completely smooth. Within 5 years the planets had started trading with each other and both worlds grew Stronger. 20 years after the truce both planets where invaded by a far off race, but because both planets had put aside their differences and collaborated in many different areas, including defense, they were able to fight off the invaders.
If Captain Kirk were a Biker and a member of a group like NCOMC and he was sitting down with the leaders of all the Major Motorcycle Clubs in the world, how long would it take him to find a common ground between the groups? I wonder if he could get them to talk and realize it was in their best interest to get along, to work together.
Motorcycle Clubs already have an invading force looking to take them down. Will the groups keep fighting each other, making themselves weaker as this force works to end them all forever or will a Captain Kirk arise to Unite them?

The world of academic publishing is perhaps not the first thing that many people would think of when considering new and innovative technology. So it may be somewhat surprising to learn that it is exactly this very arena which is driving huge changes in the way that we read books.
The Amazon Kindle ebook reader was first launched in November 2007. At that time, it didn’t really register in the academic community. When the new Kindle 2 was released in February 2009 there was perhaps a little more interest – but not that much.
It was only with the announcement of Amazon’s Kindle DX that it became clear that our reading habits were about to be subject to major modification. The large screen of the DX, coupled with its native pdf file handling ability, made it ideal for academic textbooks containing large quantities of graphs and pictures.
Educational establishments quickly cottoned on to the fact that they could save money by using digital textbooks and e-book readers. Without the cost of paper or ink, and with none of the distribution fees which would normally be required for a physical product, e-books are a much cheaper alternative to a conventional paper book. Considerable financial savings could be made by schools, colleges and universities by making the switch to electronic textbooks.
In addition to financial considerations, updating of electronic media is much faster and easier. Currently, there is an average gap of seven years between revisions of standard textbooks. A change to digital textbooks would allow much more frequent revision and help to keep textbooks up to date and current.
Another benefit which is of interest to many academic establishments is the environmental aspects of electronic books and e-book readers. Even considering the materials used in the manufacture of the readers and the electricity required to operate them they are much more eco-friendly than the normal paper based alternative.
Whatever way you choose to look at it, the introduction of electronic textbooks makes perfect sense. They are already in use in many educational establishments and, when you look at all the potential benefits outlined above, it seems highly likely that their usage can be expected to increase rapidly in the near future.

When the Amazon management team get together to review the company’s performance in 2009, they will have good reason to feel content – but not smug. It’s been a very good year for the internet retail giant – and a lot of the credit must go to the Amazon Kindle e-book reader.
Amazon released the Kindle 2 in February of 2009. It was widely regarded as a big step in the right direction. Amazon had clearly paid close attention to customer feedback regarding the original Kindle, released in 2007. Wireless connectivity and the huge choice of Kindle books remained and faster pages changes, longer battery life and increased storage capacity were among the improvements which were introduced.
The launch of the Kindle 2 was marked by the publication of a special novella – “Ur” – by bestselling novelist Stephen King. Amid a blaze of publicity, the Kindle 2 quickly became a “must have” gadget.
Amazon followed up, just a few months later in June, with the release of the Kindle DX. The large DX screen made it ideal for readers of magazines, newspapers and academic textbooks. Surprisingly, it was the traditional world of academic publishing which generated a lot of publicity for the new DX.
The academic world quickly saw the potential benefits offered by the Kindle. Interactive education – tests and pop quizzes for example – would be possible and it would be very much easier to ensure that textbooks were kept up to date and current. As a result of using electronic books which didn’t require paper, academic bodies would not only save money, but be more environmentally friendly as well – two key considerations for such institutions who have both financial budgets and environmental goals to meet nowadays.
As well as establishing partnerships with a number of colleges and universities, Amazon benefited from a lot of publicity generated by political bodies such as the New Democratic Leadership Council and Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger – both of whom waxed lyrical on the educational potential of e-book readers in general and the Amazon Kindle in particular.
However, as bright as things were looking for Amazon, there were signs that trouble was looming. Other manufacturers, having seen Amazon develop the e-book reader market, were now becoming aware of the massive potential of this fledgling sector. An impressive list of competitors, including the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Sony and Barnes and Noble, wanted their share – and they all had their own readers in development.
It’s a backhanded compliment to Amazon that practically every reader which shows any promise is immediately dubbed the “Kindle Killer”. The fact of the matter is however, that despite all the money and time spent on development by the competition, Amazon currently remains the biggest kid in the playground – and by some way. The two biggest threats – Sony’s Daily Edition reader and the Nook from Barnes and Noble – have both had their release dates moved back. It begins to look highly probable that Amazon itself could be the most likely producer of the Kindle Killer – the Kindle 4. Could we reasonably expect to see this sometime in 2010?
